SafeGuard bloacks direct website on mobile phone but not our PC

Hello, we have some young children so have set SafeGuard to block pornography sites. On our mobile phone, tablets and different PC computer browsers if I do a search for example ".... porn" it will come up saying this site is blocked which is great.

On our tablets and mobile phones which are connected to the wifi router if I try to put in a porn website direct it also comes up blocked.

However on our PC browsers for example if I type in "www.soandsoporn.com" it will open up and show me that website.

> Hopefully I don't think our son's know any of the porn or over 18 website https website links direct but was just wondering why on our tablets and mobile phones there's no way of getting that website up whether searching or typing the website address in but on our PC it lets you bypass SafeGuard by typing the website in directly.

There are quite a lot of free porn websites so it would take too long to manually add them all to blocked website names. Thanks.

Re: SafeGuard bloacks direct website on mobile phone but not our PC

Hello @rob121pt

Thanks a lot for reaching out. Yeah that does seem odd, we'd usually expect it to be the other way round. Anyway, the only real way to bypass safeguard is to manually change the DNS server settings on the specific device, so in this case, your PC.

In theory,m the Safeguard DNS should have been set automatically on your PC when you amended the settings through your Member Centre,

Going forward, please confirm that the DNS on your PC is set to:

Primary - 213.120.234.38

Secondary - 213.120.234.42

You'll find further information on how to change your network DNS here: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-change-your-pcs-dns-settings-windows-10

Correct me if I'm wrong but if you're using a browser such as Chrome or Firefox changing your local DNS settings won't work as they now both use DNS over HTTPS by default .

Don't know about Chrome, but I thought you had to enable it in FF?

Yes, AFAICS it's not on by default in the UK

So it isn't, looks like its on by default in the US for Firefox, but as far as I can tell its on by default for everyone on Chrome.

Re: SafeGuard bloacks direct website on mobile phone but not our PC

According to this

Here is how this “same-provider DNS-over-HTTP upgrade” approach works. Chrome maintains a list of DNS providers known to support DNS-over-HTTPS. Chrome uses this list to match the user’s current DNS service provider with that provider’s DNS-over-HTTPS service, if the provider offers one. By keeping the user’s chosen provider, we can preserve any extra services offered by the DNS service provider, such as family-safe filtering, and therefore avoid breaking user expectations.

Chrome's default is not supposed to break any ISP  provided parental controls...

Re: SafeGuard bloacks direct website on mobile phone but not our PC

I just checked using command cmd and my server is below which sounds odd? Thanks,

DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 8.8.8.8
                                              8.8.4.4

Re: SafeGuard bloacks direct website on mobile phone but not our PC

Well that explains why safeguard isnt working, you're using Googles DNS servers. You must have DNS servers set on the network interface (NIC) rather than allowing DHCP to set them.

Re: SafeGuard bloacks direct website on mobile phone but not our PC

Hiya @rob121pt, as @MisterW has advised you're using Google DNS. If you amend the settings as advised, this should resolve the issue for you. Let us know how you get on.
