I may mean that devices at the current location of the router (if any) may struggle, but having it closer to your main 'area of use' is always a good idea - in my experience, anyway.

I agree. When we got FTTC the office was where we mostly used it but now it's the loung and we're not so fussy about having tech stuff in the corner of the lounge This is the ideal time to change it.

However, when I try to stream anything on the tv such as netflix, youtube etc. sometimes it works & sometimes the little wheel thing just goes round & round every 10 minutes. So I give up trying. I'm hoping that moving the router into the lounge that this will solve the problem.
If the new location is close to the TV , then I'd suggest using a wired connection to the TV. You'll get a much better streaming experience.

I'm not clear as to whether the "server" is wired or wireless ?, or what it's used for ?
Given that servers tend to need good connectivity (with the router) in order to be reliable,
will moving the router to the opposite end of the house cause issues ? or can the server also move to where the router will be ?
.

The other cluster, are the original tech review sites, and computer magazine reviews, that say that their testing achieved 680Mbps. I wonder if the review sites had some magic pre-release firmware to get good reviews ?
That has echoes of car manufactures' emission testing!!

The server is wireless and is used to house all my data, photos etc.

On that basis, @Katie222 ,it may still be possible to continue as you are at the moment, but if you have to move it, is it a big unit?

No the server is not big - about 8" square and I could put it next to the router if I need to. It's not noisy at all.

OK, Katie - leave it where it is and see what happens.

Hi all. All went well with the installation though the location is now in the corner of the lounge behind the tv which is not a big deal as the modem & server can't be seen behind the tv. Not everything is connected yet but I'll get finished tomorrow.
Thanks to you all for your help - you're all stars!!

Good to hear the install went smoothly.
I'm not sure the router being behind the TV is the best place for WiFi - possible interference issues. Worth running checks just to see if you're happy with WiFi performance with the TV switched on.

Brian - It was the only place in the house with an external wall & double socket. The previous BT socket was into the front porch which has no power supply & he couldn't bring it through the garage into the lounge. We'll have a check over the next days & see how it goes. The previous line is still switched on at the moment.
The only things I haven't checked are the ip security cameras which I will set up tomorrow. Connection to laptops & server is instant but I'll try streaming on the tv tomorrow & see what happens to cameras etc.
