quick question please - my original line is still live and I get a dialing tone. Does BT/Openreach switch this off at their end or do I just unplug the original FTTC modem?

BT will eventually switch it off, but you should unplug the modem in the mean time, if only to save electricity!
Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Just unplug anything connected to the old master socket - it won't work anyway.
