Re: being moved to Digital Voice

@@Baldrick @stuck @corringham

I am in the east midlands so I better get my finger out, but I never do anything in a rush.
So I will get my tea and get round to it later.

So to be sure - I should be able move my landline to Plusnet (hopefully), then when (or before) Full Fibre is connected set up a VoIP with a 3rd party (assuming Plusnet don't come up with anything before that).
Thanx for your input. I'M off for tea now catch up later

Re: being moved to Digital Voice

BT are "encouraging" most of their customers in the target regions to swap over (there are some exceptions in special cases). I'd expect that once a good number on an exchange have swapped there will be pressure on other providers to move their customers a.s.a.p.

I don't know when Plusnet will "encourage" customers to move (to BT I assume?), but I can't believe they will wait until Dec 25 as that would be sure to create quite a lot of chaos!

You mean that even though my phone is being moved from BT to Plusnet, my landline will still die as soon as BT switch my region over to 'Digital Voice'?

I got the impression from the posts in this topic that because my landline will not be with BT at that time, it will continue to work until Plusnet pull the plug on their phone packages.

That's a good question, which only Plusnet or BT can answer.

I would assume that openreach are rolling out "digital voice"  in a given

area to all premises, irrespective of which ISP  supplies the service.

It's up to the ISPs to notify their customers of the upcoming change

@Protech  "I would assume that openreach are rolling out "digital voice"  in a given area to all premises, irrespective of which ISP  supplies the service."  What you assume is completely wrong, Openreach are not doing any digital voice service. They did  in the past have DVA (digital voice access) on FTTP connections but that has been discontinued. It is now up to individual ISPs to offer a  VOIP service or not, some will, some won't. it looks like Plusnet will not have any VOIP phone service.

@RealAleMadrid
My apologies, used the wrong terminology. I should have said that Openreach are rolling out digital phone lines on an area by area basis. My understanding is that is not being done on per ISP basis.

Re: being moved to Digital Voice

@Protech  Please define a digital phone line. There is physically no such thing, a voip phone service can be a run over any connection even with a low data rate. I have had a voip phone service on ADSL and FTTC services. Openreach are removing traditional copper line phone services from all types of connections so not really rolling out but the opposite.😁

Re: being moved to Digital Voice

There is a very large quantity of personal assumption and pure quesswork being promulgated in this thread.

Returning to the original post and those of a similar ilk. The point that needs to be made is that this is a time of great change in landline telecoms. For most this will be handled by ISPs in a controlled manner.

However, this could turn into a total nightmare for those who have their landline telephone service and broadband contracts with different companies.

To assume that two companies, regardless of whether they are both sub companies of the same organisation, communicate with each other is folly

And also for those that have both broadband and phone with a single company that doesn't offer VoIP.

@corringham Why? VoIP services can be supplied by others than ISPs.

Yes, but transferring a number to voip whilst retaining other services is problematic.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: being moved to Digital Voice

Agreed, @MisterW , However AIUI you can have a 'new' number if you set up an account with a VoIP provider - I know I looked into this a couple of years ago, or longer, but decided it wasn't worth it, as I was using my mobile for all outgoing calls and advising those who had previously used my land line to call my mobile instead, providing it didn't land them with big bills.

These days, I only have two people who call me on the fixed-line phone.

Yes they can, and tech knowledgable people will cope. For non-techies having to sign up to a VoiP provider, sort out a suitable phone and/or ATA will be very daunting - it is a whole lot more intimidating than simply plugging your existing phone into the back of the broadband router.

Setting up my first home computer was intimidating 30+ years ago.

And how many of your elderly relatives managed to do the same?

Of course, in those days a computer wasn't a daily essential - unlike a land-line for many elderly relatives these days.
