But how long would the modem retain sync for when the router was off, could it really survive 7+ hours?
Is there not some form of Ping Pong between the two devices. i.e. Router to Modem Are you there? Modem to Router Yes. Or indeed vice-versa.

No there isn't. Sync should be maintained continuously until some external factor affects it - power cut, major interference or other fault on the line etc.
