Full Fiber 900 Download speed 100-130

Hi,

I recently had full fiber 900 installed and the maximum I can achieve via ethernet is 100-130 Mbps and 100 Mbps upload which I believe is the correct upload limit. Via wi-fi, I'm achieving 300 Mbps download and 100 Mbps upload.

I have followed the simple steps like reset the ONT and router and still no joy regarding speed I bought this package as I download games for PC.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks.

Re: Full Fiber 900 Download speed 100-130

Which standard of Ethernet cable are you using and is there anything between the router and PC? It's possible it's only Cat5 which would limit you to 100mbps - you need Cat5e or greater to get speeds over 100mbps.

I would try with a different cable, especially as you are seeing higher speeds with WiFi.

Re: Full Fiber 900 Download speed 100-130

Hi @nshezz

As you are seeing 100 mbps on the upstream it indicates that you have been provisioned on the correct package.

Only the 900 mbps downstream package supports 100 mbps upstream.

WiFi 5 as provided by the PN Hub 2 and most WiFi client devices would probably struggle to be much faster than 300 mbps.

To get the full 900 mbps on one device, Ethernet is the way to go.

Looking at Ethernet result, having over 100 mbps on the downstream should rule out a faulty Ethernet cable.

Are you using the Plusnet Hub2 router?

What device on Ethernet are testing the speeds with?

Some Windows anti virus packages are known to reduce download speeds.

Regards

Richard

Re: Full Fiber 900 Download speed 100-130

You could try booting a linux live distribution:

https://itsfoss.com/linux-mint-live-usb/

and then perform a speed test.

@nshezz

An alternative to the speedtest GUI is speedtest cli which provides more detail on the test performed

See https://www.speedtest.net/apps/cli for details and downloads

@nshezz

It might be worth checking the driver for the ethernet adapter is the latest Realtek published version and not published by Mircosoft.

Have you ever seen higher speeds, for instance when transferring files on your local network? Your PC should easily manage much higher speeds, but since it is slow in both Windows 11 and Linux Mint it suggests the issue is either the PC hardware, the cable, or the router (i.e. not software or drivers).

EDIT: I just thought to test the speedtest server in case that was the limiting factor - I get

         Server: M247 Ltd - Manchester (id: 48181)
              ISP: Gigaclear Limited
Idle Latency: 12.23 ms (jitter: 0.04ms, low: 12.18ms, high: 12.24ms)
Download:  605.35 Mbps (data used: 477.7 MB)
                     16.07 ms (jitter: 0.33ms, low: 10.90ms, high: 28.61ms)
Upload:       615.74 Mbps (data used: 482.6 MB)
                     11.01 ms (jitter: 0.28ms, low: 10.58ms, high: 11.47ms)
Packet Loss: 0.0%
 Result URL: https://www.speedtest.net/result/c/95837151-9718-4ac6-832f-9aad7b70babd

For London servers I get much lower latency, but otherwise similar results.

Re: Full Fiber 900 Download speed 100-130

Okay bit of an update, i have tried everything reset ONT and router used every port checked every connection reset my network adapters with realtek drivers and flushed my DNS and winsock logs.

I even bought my own cat 6 cable and Ethernet crimping tool and tester just to make sure that everything on my end was working correctly.

It maybe could be the router or a fiber issue outside. Nothing i do improves my speed which is a shame because i was looking forward to being able to download large games without the wait. defiantly not the 500mbps minimum i was guaranteed. I've truly run out of things to try on my end so if anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

Thanks

Re: Full Fiber 900 Download speed 100-130

How about logging into the router and seeing if you have a 1Gbps reported on the WAN link?

Or by-passing the router and set up a PPOE session from a PC/Laptop?

Re: Full Fiber 900 Download speed 100-130

You could eliminate the router by setting up a PPPoE connection on the PC LAN card and connect it directly to the ONT.

Lots of help online for instructions.
