Full Fibre 500 not reaching estimated speed

It is quite unlikely anyone is going to be carping about 80mbps FTTP performance.  The context of such is, as here, where a single device is probably (for any of the reasons stated) unlikely to saturate the available bandwidth.

Sure a modern 5400 disk with a sizable cache might keep up ... if reading / writing sequentially, but that would be atypical performance.  Such does not though detract from the real merits of the assertion ... at the higher FTTP speeds various aspects to "typical" kit are more likely to be the throughput bottle neck than the FTTP link.

Would be interesting to look at the machine's resource utilisation plot for a device in this space, especially that for the LAN.

A few other things to consider are:

• Is there anything else using the network at the time of running the speedtests?
• Is there anything else running on the computer doing the speedtest (maybe in the background) that is using some of the resources and causing a bottleneck.
• Are there any VPN's or proxies running that might be slowing it down.  My work laptop (with a very good spec) usually tops out at around 320mb as all traffic is sent over a transparent VPN service.

It's not always obvious what causes slowdowns when these kind of speeds are involved, and can sometime take quite a bit of detective work.

Possibly not slow downs but pinch points somewhere other than where most deem the problem to the - the link.
