Full fibre speed upgrade but no speed increase

My package was upgraded 2 days ago from a 500Mbs to a 900Mbs package.  I can see that the upload speed has increased since the change to around 110Mbs but I am not seeing any change in my download speed.

My router is a Linksys VELOP WHW03.

I have tried speed testing with a number of different providers and from a number of different wired devices, they all report similar speeds just under 500Mbs.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Alex

Are you testing via Wi-Fi?

All tests are via a wired connection.

@alex_snape

A little more detail on how you've setup the system would be helpful, number of mesh nodes (if any), backhaul connection (connection between nodes) wired or wireless.

Also where on the network are you testing, for more accurate results you'd need to test when connected to the router with no other network activity.

Re: Full fibre speed upgrade but no speed increase

@alex_snape, in addition to what @Dan_the_Van has suggested, other things to consider is what else is happening on your connection at the time of the speedtest (such as other computers download anything, including updates, Smart TVs streaming etc...).  Also what is the spec of the computer you're doing the speedtest from and is it capable of processing the data fast enough (including hard drives writing the data, processor, memory etc...) and if the computer is doing anything else at the time of the speedtest which would use any of its resources.

One thing I suffer from on my high spec'd work laptop is the proxy service it uses limits my connection speed (usually around 320-350mbps), so something else to check on.  Another laptop I've got which is much older and lower spec (but without my works proxy) can easily max out my connection.

It can also be advantageous to use the Speedtest.net CLI tool rather than the browser version to eliminate the browser: https://www.speedtest.net/apps/cli

Re: Full fibre speed upgrade but no speed increase

My setup is broadly as follows.  I have 4 mesh nodes utilising a Cat6 wired backhaul and am running the speedtest from a PC connected via a switch to the primary router/mesh node.  The PC is a 10th gen I7, 24GB RAM and NVMe SSD running Ubuntu - I have run a combination of speed tests using both speedtest-cli and the browser based tests.

The VELOP router also has a speed test capability, which is displaying speeds in a similar range.

I also have an M1 MacBook, which I could use to connect directly to the OTN - which will eliminate any other network activity.  I will try this now and post the results.

I also spoke the Plusnet support and they said that there may be up to a 3 day period where the speed increases are not active so they are calling me back at the end of the 3 days (tomorrow).  In the meantime, I shall continue checking.

Re: Full fibre speed upgrade but no speed increase

I'm not familiar with the VELOP router, but that all sounds well spec'd out to me.  Definitely worth plugging in to the ONT, creating a PPPoE session and trying there.

The 3 day period is a load of rubbish.  Openreach inform Plusnet when they complete the order, and the order will then complete on the Plusnet side (which should cause you to receive an email informing you of this).  You should get the full speeds of the product from that point.

There's been some instances where Openreach seem to have provisioned people on the wrong speed profile, though I don't think that would be the case here, as I don't think the 500mbps profile has a 100mbps upload option, so I think that would be ruled out.

Complete rubbish! As long as the product change has completed then the speed change should be instant ( well maybe after a reconnect ?)

That will be a good test.

Re: Full fibre speed upgrade but no speed increase

Thanks for the advice.  I went ahead and tried a PPPoE session direct to the ONT and my speeds are much more in line with what I would expect > 800Mbs.  I also disconnected the backhaul and plugged directly into the router and see similar speeds.  It appears that the issue is within my home network so I shall continue to work it through.

Re: Full fibre speed upgrade but no speed increase

Just in case this helps anyone in future I am seeing wildly different results from speedtest-cli and the browser speed test.  The command line version on Ubuntu is reporting a value less than half of the browser based test.  I have verified by also using FAST command line.  Both FAST and speedtest.net are reporting > 800Mbs, whereas speedtest-cli is still reporting 300-400Mbs.

Re: Full fibre speed upgrade but no speed increase

Thanks Alex.  Very interesting.  I'd have expected the cli version to report higher speeds than the browser if there was a difference!
