Thanks @Mr_Paul for your expertise, much appreciated, but progress is enevitable and users will alway demand bigger and better systems. Video rate of 1080P in our house is fine but maybe not for our neighbours.

@RealAleMadrid My comments were about video streaming over the internet so speed and bandwidth is important. I see that 8k streaming requires a minimum off 50Mbps, so if terrestial TV move to an online only services and decided to stream at 8K quality then most of us will not be watching much.........

Don't forget as well, that in addition to screen resolutions getting bigger, new codecs are also being developed - so to a degree the two things cancel out.

For example, DVDs and SD Freeview channels use the MPEG2/h262 codec. When HD - BluRay and Freeview HD came along, they used the MPEG4/h264 codec, which was around 50% more efficient than its predecessor. UHD streams generally use the h265 codec, which again is around 50% more efficient than h264.

Note also that screen resolution and codec are not tied to each other: I use the h265 codec for ripping DVDs.

@Champnet  I don't believe IPTV services will decide to only stream at 8K quality when as you say many people would not have fast enough speeds, let alone having capable display devices. I would expect different rate streams to be available.

On computer displays there is definitely something to say for 4K. You can display a lot of information simultaneously and you usually only have to focus on a small area at the time, which means the higher detail really has added value. Furthermore the short viewing distance allows a wide field of view without the need for extremely large displays. 8K might have its uses with very specific applications, but in general it would be excessive.

With televisions it’s a different story. Many people probably aren’t even making full use of their FHD TV yet. To really profit from 4K you’d need an extremely large screen, or sit extremely close. And 8K is just plain ridiculous. For a 250 cm viewing distance you’d need a 595 x 335 cm screen. There aren’t that many people with a wall that big in their house and even if you had, you’d need a pretty impressive beamer and a very large projection screen (they obviously don’t make TV’s that big).
