LAN slow WIFI high

Im hoping someone can help.

Switched over to Plusnet Full Fibre a few weeks ago. Everything seems fine but Im getting slower ethernet connected speed than I am Wifi.

Ive left it a few days for things to settle as they would normally suggest but nothing has changed

Im getting around 90 -95MBPS on Ethernet and 200-300MBPS on wifi direct from the Router .

I have tested with various CAT5E cables direct into the LAN ports of the router to a lap top 90-95MBPS . Whereas the wifi direct from the router is 200 -300MBPS. A short certified CAT5 E and CAT6 cable give the same .

Testing wise I have unplugged everything from the LAN ports except a short CAT 5E ( and CAT 6) and turned off the WIFI into the LAN port of a lap top and the same occurs . I even tried the cable that came with the router ...

For a while I thought it might be my mesh system ( AC1300) but alas no . I have GIGABIT switches and the tests were done with and without these connected,,, no change .

It appears that the router is pegged at 100MBPS for its ethernet LAN ports .

Any suggestions ? The Sky system I had in before had no issue ..

Re: LAN slow WIFI high

@Enmark

You are either using CAT5 Ethernet cable or have a faulty cable. To exceed 100Mbps you must use CAT 5e or higher cables.

Re: LAN slow WIFI high

@Enmark

You say you have "GIGABIT switches", when plugged into the router do they indicate a 1Gb/s link? Will the laptop exceed 100Mb/s via the gigabit switches?

Are all cabled tests being done with the same laptop?

I wonder if, for some reason, the laptop won't negotiate a gigabit connection.

If the laptop will speedtest at more than 100Mb/s on the Plusnet supplied router on WiFi, what will it it achive on a speedtest  when connected to the mesh wifi when that is (I assume cabled) to the Plusnet router?

@Enmark

What make and model of laptop are you testing with? What operating system?

Is it's ethernet port spec'd for gigabit, or only 100Mbps?

Are all the drivers on the laptop the most up-to-date versions?

Re: LAN slow WIFI high

So some more info ..

 The laptop ( and i have tried two different ones Dell and Asus now ) is a DELL Latitude 5490 with Gigabit ethernet .Both are measured maxed at roughly 100mbps but have gigabit ethernet ports . The cables are all either CAT5E or 6 . All drivers are up to date . Used both Google and ookla both the same ..

I had originally thought the issue lay with the Mercusys mesh network ( AC1300 ) but after checking these too have gigabit ports ( H30G models and 3 of them altogether but tested using the master with no other units online ).

So to summarise again ..

Testing with an iphone for wireless , lap tops and 2 x PC's for wireless and lap tops and pc's(all with gigabit ports )   for wired they all give the same ... ( roughly range dependent on wifi ) ..

 Connect wifi direct to the router (a hub 2) gave between 200 and 300 gbps . Connect 1 x mesh via a CAT5E or Cat 6 and test wifi to this gives circa 90mbps .

Plug cat 5E or 6 into the lan port of the Hub 2 testing wired connection gives circa 90 mbps into two gigabit lap tops  . Tested both with iphone and lap tops to the mesh using same cables over wifi gives the same 80-90 mbps .

Answering all the queries in  one hit ..I hope.

Yes we have gigabit ports , yes the operating systems are either Windows 10 or 11 or IOS ( iphone ) , yes we have CAT5E or Cat 6 cables , yes we have tested all scenarios .. The switches do not show 1 gigabit LEDs as functioning ( I have specifically kept these out of the equation as a just in case but units are TP link TL SG105 S . )

It appears the LAN ports on the router are pegged at 100mbps ..

Would a rest to to router be of any assistance ? Cant see it being the network as the test shows 90mbps direct singularly into the hub 2, the same when connected on the network .

Re: LAN slow WIFI high

@Enmark

To clarify, have you checked what speed Windows is saying it has synchronised with the router at, (Network Connections in the taskbar maybe - I don't use Windows any more) - or are you solely going by speed test results?

Presumably all LAN ports show this problem? Have you tries a factory reset on the hub? Keep the reset switch closed until you get a green light.

It appears the LAN ports on the router are pegged at 100mbps ..

The Hub 2 definitely has gigabit ports. I dont have mine connected at the moment but doesnt the Network status screen show the connected speed for each of the ports ? if not doesnt the event log ( Troubleshooting->Helpdesk->Technical event log ? ) show the negotiated speed when a device is plugged in ?

If noone else has one running to check, I'll fire mine up ...

Re: LAN slow WIFI high

Ok, sorry, seems like you can ignore me , I must be confusing it with my current router!.

It's back to checking in Windows as previously suggested...

Re: LAN slow WIFI high

Sounds like the LAN ports on the Hub 2 are defective and stuck at 100mbps given all your equipment worked fine previously with Sky broadband hub (guessing SR203/4?).  I presume you tested all the LAN ports.

As already suggested by others, plug your windows computer into a LAN port.

Search and launch 'ncpa.cpl'

Double click on the Ethernet connection (may be labelled differently)

Check the Speed.

No harm in factory resetting the hub 2 to see if it makes any difference.

ps. I have the 2019 era Dell Lat 5490/5590 notebooks, and these do indeed have Intel gigabit ethernet ports.

Re: LAN slow WIFI high

@Enmark

if you look at the event log at the exact time a device connects to the Hub you will see the connection speed, the event looks like this

hh:mm:ss, DD MMM. Wire Lan Port 3 up, Speed 1000 Mbps - this message is the port detecting a connection and negotiated speed

hh:mm:ss, DD MMM. A device connected to Ethernet port 3 -  this message confirms the connection.

For 100 Mbps it would be

hh:mm:ss, dd mmm. Wire Lan Port 3 up, Speed 100 Mbps

These messages are not categorised so no filter can be applied to find them, these messages clear after a while so a search on the event log may not find them.

A port down message

hh:mm:ss, dd mmm. Wire Lan Port 3 down, Speed 10 Mbps - 10 Mbps is reported as speed negotiating starts at 10 Mbps.

Port can be 1, 2, or 3

Re: LAN slow WIFI high

@MisterW

My apologies for the duff information yesterday. I have tried again and as @Dan_the_Van says, it is shown, thanks Dan.

What I did yesterday to try it out was to unplug my NAS, which is connected via a switch. This disconnect is reported minus the speed as per my earlier post.

I have noticed scheduled back ups seem to be very slow the last couple of days and have noticed when trying this that whilst the switch reconnected at 1000Mbps it was only running at 10Mbps when I disconnected it. It was running at full speed so I have no idea what had happened. Whether this is relevant to this problem? I recall this happening once before.

Re: LAN slow WIFI high

@Baldrick1

If you disconnect a LAN cable connection rather than shut the device down you will see the same error message

hh:mm:ss, DD MMM A device disconnected from Ethernet port 1
hh:mm:ss, DD MMM Wire Lan Port 1 down, Speed 10 Mbps

10 Mbps is the default speed for a LAN port with no device connected, so do not confuse this with being an error. When a device connects the speed negotiation starts at 10, then 100 then 1000 stopping at the speed the device or cable supports

Edit: you only see the above message for devices connected to the Hub Two LAN ports, device connected to a switch I would only expect to see DHCP events

Re: LAN slow WIFI high

Thanks all for the input .. Apologies for the late response personal issues at home and not good news over this festive break .. So a resolve at last .. The Mesh was at fault with the wrong box at the front of the network .. I should have looked closer at the reference number .. There is a big difference between a H30 and a H30G .. The H30 is only 100mbps enabled and the H30G 1 Gig .. Doh ..Somehow I had purchased 3 x H30G units and as bolt on a couple of H30... ( thought they were cheap .. ) A swap is required ..

Another issue was that the laptops ( both work ) are pegged at 100mbps ( but capability for 1Gig ) this is done by work IT .. with the link speed showing at 100mbps .. Redoing the network configuration by adding an 'old ' Tenda AC 8 1 gigabit access point into the equation and testing that at 5G gave the network results expected at near 300mbps ..

So thanks to all that contributed and setting me on the right investigative route .. Problem solved ..The HUB2 does have gigabit lan ports after all.. Time to rework the network and put the right mesh unit at the front of the system ( not too worried about the far reaches of the house limited to 100 mbps ... )
