Massive difference in wired speed compaired to wifi

hi all as above, before Christmas I upgraded to 500 full fibre ever since my wifi wired has been dismal hovering around 100-150 had an engineer round he changed some settings said all s fine really it was just the same phoned CS she couldn't find any faults then she had a lightbulb moment and asked what cable I was using cat 5 I said ah she says you need cat 5e to get a true reading put the phone down had a rummage in my cable box and found a cat 5e bingo 504-514 Mb does this mean the router if faulty, or I need some kind of booster for my wifi if so which is best

Cheers Peter

Re: Massive difference in wired speed compaired to wifi

As the cat5e cable seems to have achieved the desired effect, does that not suggest it is/was the cable - and not the router - which was the issue?

@jab1

I suspect you may have been understandably thrown off-track by the OP referring to his Internet as WiFi, as well as the actual WiFi, see my bold below;

@RobPN But he/she then said 'had a rummage in my cable box and found a cat 5e bingo 504-514 Mb', which suggests it was the cable - or am I missing something?

@jab1

I think so.

The OP refers to "wired speed compaired to wifi" in the topic title, then refers to "wired wifi" (which is what is fixed by replacing the Ethernet cable), then goes on to ask about a booster for his WiFi, presumably the actual WiFi.

Re: Massive difference in wired speed compaired to wifi

@RobPN  But if there was a massive speed difference with the "wired wifi" being slow doesn't that imply that the actual wifi is a lot faster so why would it need a booster. it's as clear as mud.🤔
