Good day,
I am moving home and the new property has an Openreach socket. However , when I try to purchase a broadband package from Plusnet, it says that I will need a BT socket and have to pay 50 pounds for the installation.
Do you know why I am getting this message?
Thanks

I suspect that you are really being told that you have to pay an installation charge even though you have a BT socket?
If the connection to your new home is dead, that is there is no existing service on the line, then work is required at the local exchange and/or fibre cabinet. In these circumstances this is considered to be the installation work for which you will be charged.

or if the existing service was an LLU provider (Sky/Talktalk) then an engineer is still required at the exchange to reconnect the line to the BT equipment

thank you both for your prompt replies.
I assume that the previous tenant had indeed Sky as I can see 2 cables.probably for the sattelite dishes
1) @Baldrick1 Is there any way to check if the line is indeed dead?
2) @MisterW So if I were to choose Sky instead of Plusnet, would a visit from an engineer still be required?
Thanks

Plug in a phone and dial 17070 , if its an active BT line , it will report the circuit Id and phone number

You would need to ask Sky if there is an installation charge

I believe that LLU transfers are free. It's only new lines, reconnecting either a BT or LLU service that are chargeable https://www.plus.net/help/legal/plusnet-price-guide-for-residential-products/

Thanks for your post @Oti78
Just to back up @MisterW and @Baldrick1 as their advice is what I'd have said also.
Let us know if you've got any further queries.
