Ping time >200ms

Hi,

I'm getting very high ping times - generally over 200ms, often over 300ms.

I've tried switching DNS providers, but it stays pretty much the same.

Any ideas? Is a line check required?

Thanks,

Mark

Ping times mostly depend on the distance (or length of route) to the site you are pinging,

OR

by the delay caused by your router IF your UPLOAD path is being heavily used (due to "bufferbloat").

Try pinging a nearby site to see whether you still get >200ms - I use  ntp.plus.net

To test for "bufferbloat" try using  http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest

Changing DNS providers won't make any difference to ping times.

Probably not,  only if your line speed had dramatically slowed as well - which you would have mentioned

Re: Ping time >200ms

This is terrible.
I have 215ms ping as well, and it's not only me. Few people around the town I know have the same issue with Plusnet.

Come to one Plusnet, fix this; we can't work from home with this.
It's even painfully slow to open the forum here.

I've just renewed my contract, but I'll have to revoke the entire thing if this continues.

Oh no !  I'm getting  5.6ms to  ntp.plus.net   and  A+  on the "bufferbloat" test  🤣

Re: Ping time >200ms

Just did what  you suggested:

Bufferfloat averages between 50 to 900.

Before July everything worked fine, so strange.

Thanks for the tip, but:

"The server at ntp.plus.net is taking too long to respond" - it won't load the page

?  you meant to be pinging that address, not trying to view it on a web browser.

Open a terminal window and type -

ping ntp.plus.net

or whatever the equivalent command is for your operating system

How were you testing ping before ?

I get this -

$ ping ntp.plus.net

PING ntp.plus.net (212.159.13.49) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from cdns01.plus.net (212.159.13.49): icmp_seq=1 ttl=61 time=6.14 ms
64 bytes from cdns01.plus.net (212.159.13.49): icmp_seq=2 ttl=61 time=5.90 ms
64 bytes from cdns01.plus.net (212.159.13.49): icmp_seq=3 ttl=61 time=6.31 ms
64 bytes from cdns01.plus.net (212.159.13.49): icmp_seq=4 ttl=61 time=6.21 ms
64 bytes from cdns01.plus.net (212.159.13.49): icmp_seq=5 ttl=61 time=6.38 ms

Re: Ping time >200ms

Ah, sorry, misunderstood.

Weird, just did the ping from the command line and now down to 21ms. Tried again on Speedtest (which is what I originally used) and down to 22 there. So perhaps just a temporary hiccup?

That doesn't look right.

Are you on ADSL or FTTC ?

If you are on ADSL then the download speed is being reported incorrectly.

If you are on FTTC you should be getting way more upload speed - unless someone else was uploading something at the same time as you did the test.

Re: Ping time >200ms

I'm on Unlimied Fibre Extra, so FTTC?

No uploads were taking place so far as I know. Upload speed has always been bad, but I'm not overly concerned with that.

@markavey

Probably of no relevance, but here's mine for comparison;

Unfortunately it is technically quite challenging to overcome "bufferbloat" and the associated high ping problems on a broadband connection with an upload throughput of less than 1mbps, and ideally you need more than 2mbps.

What does the "BT Broadband Availability Checker"  show for your "VDSL Range A" and "VDSL Range B" ?

Go to this website -
https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com
then -
    enter your telephone number
    enter the Captcha code
    click on [Submit]

So you know what to look for, mine looks like this -
