Hi @Gandalf - sadly I'm seeing issues again today. Download speeds have dropped back down to the 18Mbps range and max observed download speed is once again substantially lower than it should be (see attached image). Can you see anything your end that might explain this?Screenshot 2022-01-23 at 20.18.07.png

Hi @stevehopkinson

Ah I'm sorry to see your speed has dropped again.

I've ran a test and I can't see anything that'd explain it unfortunately, so I'd like to arrange a further engineer from Openreach to take another look. Could you reply to the ticket I've logged Here with when you'd be available for a visit?

Let me know once you've responded and I'll make sure we book the engineer as soon as we can.

Re: PlusNet fibre: speeds much lower than advertised/guaranteed (HG612/Edgerouter X)

@stevehopkinson  it looks like the speed is banded at 25Mbps to me, that is the speed observed today. Are you able to access the line stats on the HG612? it needs to have unlocked firmware installed, have a look on the Kitz website for more info. I have been using this device for years, and I am convinced they are as good as any more recent VDSL2 modems, not that there are many about.

@Gandalf  Are you able to check the current Openreach line profile, not an out of date GEA test one?

Re: PlusNet fibre: speeds much lower than advertised/guaranteed (HG612/Edgerouter X)

@RealAleMadrid, It's a good shout but the speed isn't quite banded. The latest profile we have is from yesterday. We never receive profile data for the same day unfortunately. Yesterday's is showing as "Downstream: 0.128M-27.4M with Retransmission (High). Upstream: 0.128M-10M with no error protection" at a sync speed of 24999.

Re: PlusNet fibre: speeds much lower than advertised/guaranteed (HG612/Edgerouter X)

Hi @Gandalf - I'm currently out of the country so won't be able to arrange an engineer to come to the house anytime soon, but will arrange when I get back.

After the recent issues I've set my home server to run a speed test every hour and record the results. From what I can see, the maximum speed jumped back up to 28Mbps, but since then has been stepping down around once a day in approximately 2Mbps increments. You can see the steps quite clearly in the series of tests run over the past four days (I'm ignoring the intermittent dips below the 'steps', as those were when there was a lot of traffic on the network):

Screenshot 2022-01-28 at 18.41.53.png

You can see that it was consistently testing at 28Mbps for a while, then stepped down to 26Mbps for a day, then stepped down again to 24Mbps for a day, and is currently stable at around 22Mbps.

Do you have any idea what might be causing this behaviour? They seem to be stepping down at approximately midnight UK time every day, so I'm wondering if some task is running daily overnight at the ISP side that's resulting in the drops.

Re: PlusNet fibre: speeds much lower than advertised/guaranteed (HG612/Edgerouter X)

Hi @stevehopkinson,

I'm sorry to hear that you've been having these issues with the service. It would be hard to pinpoint what exactly is causing these dips without looking at it a bit further, but it's possible that it's due to maintenance being carried out on the line around this time of the night. This is an educated guess, but still a guess nonetheless, so best not to take it as fact at this stage.

As a slight aside, though you yourself are out of the country at the moment, is there anybody at the property who would be able to attend an engineer visit? The reason I ask is that it doesn't have to be yourself that lets the engineer in to do their thing, just needs to be someone over the age of 18. Smiley

Re: PlusNet fibre: speeds much lower than advertised/guaranteed (HG612/Edgerouter X)

Update: the pattern of speeds stepping down by 2Mbps overnight has continued today. You can see that it clearly stepped down another 2Mbps last night and is now peaking at 20Mbps. Is there anything anyone's aware of that may be causing the ISP to 'step down' the speed like this every night?

Screenshot 2022-01-29 at 19.18.47.png

@TheMightyAJ - unfortunately our master socket is fairly difficult to access and requires a lot of furniture to be moved, which I wouldn't want to ask anyone else to do. It's also not possible for our flatmate to be present in the house when the internet connection is being worked on, as he has a job that requires constant internet access and can't accommodate a few hours' downtime while the engineer investigates. I'll be back in the country on 2 February so will respond to arrange an engineer to visit after that.

Thanks a lot for getting back to us @stevehopkinson and I too am sorry to see how the line is performing at the moment. Give us a nudge on here when you're back then and we'll get an appointment arranged. Smiley

Re: PlusNet fibre: speeds much lower than advertised/guaranteed (HG612/Edgerouter X)

Hi all - back in the country now.

After getting back, I thought I’d quickly try swapping out the HG612 and replacing it with the ZT992 that the Openreach engineer left with me after his last visit, although neither of us thought it would achieve anything. To my surprise, the line speed jumped to around 29Mbps overnight and has remained there ever since.

No idea why that would be the case, but I’m happy with the speed as it is now. I’ll continue to monitor and reply here if things begin to degrade again.

Thanks,
Steve
