Reset IP address

Hi, how do I reset my IP address? My IP address has been flagged on a survey site I'm using, and I'm not sure why. If I change my IP address, will it affect other devices connected to it? Thanks

Re: Reset IP address

@NatH1

Assuming that you haven't paid Plusnet the £5 for a static IP address, have you tried switching off your router/Hub for half an hour or so an then re-powering it?

That sometimes works.

Re: Reset IP address

@Mr_Paul I have seen that recommended before, but have also been told the IP can be quite sticky and the router needs to be off for quite a long time.

@NatH1  I would try switching the router off overnight and with any luck it will have a new IP address assigned to it when you switch it back on in the morning.

Re: Reset IP address

@NatH1 We usually advise to leave it off for about an hour as like @Ian06 said they can stick around for that time.

Dynamic IPs used to be allocated centrally , so if you disconnected for even a short time, there was a pretty good chance that while you were disconnected, someone else would connect and get your IP, so you got a new one when you reconnected.

Nowadays, IPs are allocated by the DLM from a local pool, so you need someone in that small pool to connect while you are disconnected. Obviously the chances of someone connecting in that pool are now reduced and you need to be disconncted for a much longer period to increase the chance
