Slow Download , high upload, high ping

Hello, i have the 500mgb package and the speeds i am getting are 39ping ,  96mgbs download , 74upload. then i test again and the speed goes up 50 mgb. then i test straight after and its dropped say 50 meg. these tests are all WIRED ethernet tests from a high spec laptop.

also have the latest router that bt installed the hub 2 or whatever it is called.

bt been out once and said nothing wrong there end. i have had it installed 16 days approx. plus net say nothing wrong there end.

if i reset the router it tests at like 480mgb straight away but continually drops down to 100mgb over an hour and keep there till i reset the router.

Help please

Re: Slow Download , high upload, high ping

Just so we all have a better picture, can you send in pictures of where the router is located etc and how it is set up? I can't test sync speed on full fibre you see. I know the guys are also going to ask to see the router stats so are you able to log into the router and give us the stats from there?

"Advanced Settings" > "Technical Log" > "Information" page of the router.

I can't test sync speed on full fibre you see.

@willcutforth i thought you (ISP's) could now run a speed test directly to the ONT. Only thing it is an intrusive test i.e it drops the users connection for the duration of the test.

f i reset the router it tests at like 480mgb straight away but continually drops down to 100mgb over an hour and keep there till i reset the router.

That's a bit strange...

Re: Slow Download , high upload, high ping

@Nr352pa112 thanks for that, at least it shows the cable from the router to the ONT is correct and is a gigabit link

Data rate:1000 Mbps / 1000 Mbps

The stats dont show the uptime for the router ? roughly how long is it since you last reset it ?

Is there any possibility that there is a device connected wirelessly that is downloading a lot of data ?

or possibly the laptop trying to download updates whilst doing the speed tests ?

Re: Slow Download , high upload, high ping

@MisterW The stats dont show the uptime for the router ?

The answer you seek is found here  Home page > Status

Network Uptime - active PPPoE login

System Uptime - how long the hub has been switched on.

Might speedtest cli be better to use here?

Re: Slow Download , high upload, high ping

@Nr352pa112  do you get similar results using a different speed tester ? - such as Waveform Internet Speed Test

On my connection have never found the BT Wholesale "Performance Test" to be anywhere near accurate !

Its a work laptop. local government issued . so alot of restrictions etc (no downlaoding apps, cannot run CMD prompt etc)

i thought it was i7 buts its not. spec below.  could it be the laptop causing non accurate speed tests?

@Nr352pa112  Aah! My guess that its almost certainly running VPN software and so any internet access (including the speed test) will be via the VPN.  That may well be throttling the speed...

Re: Slow Download , high upload, high ping

@Nr352pa112 you could confirm if a VPN is active by going to https://www.whatismyip.com/ in a browser and comparing the IP shown with the one shown on the router status page. If a VPN is active , they will be different

Probably not useful now if the VPN is the problem but as @Dan_the_Van said earlier the Ookla speedtest cli (https://www.speedtest.net/apps) is the most consistent test for higher speeds. Problem is you're probably not allowed to install it! The browserbased one is https://www.speedtest.net/
