Slow Ethernet Speed - Fast Wifi Speed

Hi All

Im hoping someone can help as im not getting any joy from Plusnet support

Switched over to Full Fibre a few weeks ago. Everything seems fine but Im getting slower ethernet connected speed than I am Wifi. Its normally the other way around.

Ive left it a few weeks for things to settle as they normally suggest but nothing has changed

Im getting around 90mbps on Ethernet and 140-150 on wifi

Ive re-booted the router ( Hub2) and have changed my ethernet cables.

Ive tried my MacBook and my work laptop to do the tests. Both are the same.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this ?

Re: Slow Ethernet Speed - Fast Wifi Speed

@PeterStocks My thought is the Ethernet card in your machines, but I could be wrong.

Good call, @Browni , and probably the right one.

Then it sounds like the card, as I said - how old are the machines in question?

Re: Slow Ethernet Speed - Fast Wifi Speed

Can you find the specs of the card in each, I'm guessing they aren't Gbit?

Re: Slow Ethernet Speed - Fast Wifi Speed

That looks as though it should be doing better than it is, but I am not a hardware expert.

Re: Slow Ethernet Speed - Fast Wifi Speed

The hub 2 will show the link speed for wired devices, IIRC  both on the device list and in the event log

Re: Slow Ethernet Speed - Fast Wifi Speed

I’m not sure how to do that. I’ve accessed the hub but cannot see any link speeds ?

Re: Slow Ethernet Speed - Fast Wifi Speed

@PeterStocks

unfortunately I do not think the My Devices shows the link speed.

However if you navigate from the home page to Advanced Settings >Technical Log >Event Log, hopefully you will see this line

Wire Lan Port N up, Speed 1000 Mbps where N is 1,2 or 3

This message appears when the device connects to the LAN.

If you laptop is connected to a device like a switch or powerline device which runs at 100Mbs then the laptop speed  will be limited by that device.

Re: Slow Ethernet Speed - Fast Wifi Speed

I don't have my hub 2 running at the moment to check. I thought it showed link speed on the devices page.

It certainly logs the speed of each connected port in the eventblog when a port connects. So iunplug and reconnect the device and then check the log

Re: Slow Ethernet Speed - Fast Wifi Speed

So im directly connected to the Hub and this is what the report is showing

Wire Lan Port 1 up, Speed 100 Mbps

Would this suggest that the Hub is limiting the speed ?
