I had looked at the instructions believe it or not. I had already re-read them and was going to re-post. If you use the B & A terminals for the extension does this send a filtered signal only? If so, then there's no phone line. If it sends both then you still need a filter on the extension. Or have I got this completely wrong?

You use pins 2 and 5 the filtered output of the filter to connect the extensions.

@bmc

Hi Brian, I'm sorry for the late reply. Here is a photo inside the master socket:

IMG_20220214_203854.jpg

It appears as though there is an orange "Bell" wire. It comes into the premises via the black cable and connects to my extension line. It terminates at the top of the extension socket in my office:

The extension line was installed 20-25 years ago when my grandparents lived in the house. They used to have a rotary telephone!

@Baldrick1

From the instructions : Telephone extensions - Telephone extensions are run from terminals 5, 3 and 2. These extensions will
not carry the ADSL/Broadband signal as this line
is filtered at source inside the faceplate splitter.

To me this means the extension has no broadband signal so does not work for the OP. They're run both phone and internet from the exxtension.

Either that or I'm totally confused.

Out of time at the moment to discuss futher but a quick question. From the latest photos is the top one the Master Socket and the bottom one the extension.

No you are not confused,that is precisely what I am recommending, The hub should be located at the master socket, not on the end of an extension. If the OP wants to distribute the network from the office

then the answer is to run an Ethernet cable alongside the telephone extension as I stated earlier.

Connecting the hub on the end of an extension lead can lead to signal degradation if a poor quality cable is used,.If the master socket is also used then this can be diagnosed as a bridge tap. In this case the result has been the upload speed being halved.

Re: Upgrade to VDSL2 profile 35b?

Looking carefully at the top picture I see a black cable entering the bottom left corner, in bottom right corner I see a orange and white wire coming out of the end of the assumed phone line coming into the property and being then crimped to a orange/white and white/orange wires of the multi core cable.

Screenshot 2022-02-15 074114.png

again looking at the top picture shows the A and B connectors with blue/white and white/blue wires

Screenshot 2022-02-15 074938.png

From this I conclude this is NOT the master NTE5. So a question about the top picture is this an active phone point?

The bottom picture shows a orange/white and white/orange wires connected to the A and B contacts of NTE5.

Screenshot 2022-02-15 074918.png

I think the bottom picture is the master NTE.

If it was looking into this issue, I would remove any other connections on the bottom NTE other than the orange/white and white/orange wires connected to the A and B contacts

You do not need two NTE5

The recommendation still stands it is advised to have the modem/router connected to the master, but this is not always practical.

Dan.

@Baldrick1

So we were talking at cross purposes. It happens. I was trying to help the OP keep his equipment at his preferred location. Somewhere I thought I read the extension is only circa 6m but I cannot see this on a re-read of the thread.

Re: Upgrade to VDSL2 profile 35b?

@osian-dafydd

Now I've had time to look properly it appears the top picture (as you actually state!!!) is the Master Socket. It has the black incoming feed and the off white feed to the extension.

The cabling looks a mess. @Dan_the_Van  has talked about it but I can't make up my mind. For information the following link provides info on telephone cables over the years.

https://telecomgreen.co.uk/home-phone-repair/phone-socket-wiring-bt-master-socket-the-orange-and-whi...

Taking the extension first it appears orange cables are used for the feed. Can you confirm the blue and white cables are not connected to anything. If this is the case then you have only two wires connected so no Bell or Ring wire.

The Master Socket is where I'm really struggling. From the website I just mentioned I'm guessing, from the black cable, you have an overhead feed. It says

From a Pole using what is known as “drop wire” (stiff, with black sheath I’ve written about it already here) the colours (solid colours – no bands) are:-

Orange-White

Green-Black

The Master Socket is where I'm strugging. The green / black wires appear to be unconnected. Two "jelly" connecters appear to join the incoming orange / white wires to the orange wires of the extension cable. I cannot see any connection to the incoming feed for the blue / white wires.

Re: Upgrade to VDSL2 profile 35b?

It looks to me that the black cable is the incoming BT input. Then there has been a bodge. This has been disconnected from the master socket and connected to the extension cable. This then goes to the extension socket where presumably there is or was a filtered faceplate,  from here another two cores which should be filtered come back to the master socket location.

This needs rewiring to connect the master socket in its proper location.

Re: Upgrade to VDSL2 profile 35b?

Thank you all for the kind advice.

Given the shoddy cabling, I've decided to follow the advice given by @Baldrick1. I'll install a VDSL faceplate on the master socket & connect my OpenWRT modem & router directly to it. I'll remove the old telephone extension that was causing the degraded signal, and then route a new telephone extension line into my office.

The black cable is indeed the incoming BT line. To my untrained eye, it looks like the drop wire that @bmc mentioned. It comes into the house from a brown box mounted onto the house:

IMG_20220215_120557.jpg

This work was done more recently (~ 10 years ago) by a BT engineer when ADSL became available. I can't remember exactly why the work was done; presumably because I had some connection issues.

In any case, the poor wiring is not a major concern since I now have a fully functional 80/20 Mbps connection.

Re: Upgrade to VDSL2 profile 35b?

@osian-dafydd

Be aware that, by law, you're not allowed to touch the incoming cable. You're only allowed to do extensions from the Master Socket. If you do anything you need to be very careful.

It it weren't so expensive (£160 I believe) I would have recommended getting OpenReach in to fit a new Master Socket which would get the wiring sorted out once and for all. If the cabling to the extension location is easily replaced you could in fact get the Master Socket re-located.

True, everything from the exchange up to and including the master socket is owned and maintained by Openreach, and under their terms and conditions of service the customer should not tamper with it.

Should they become aware that you have broken those terms, you may well get a rollicking and a warning not to do it again. If it's a bodge or causes loss of service, you'll be charged for reparations.

Nothing to do with laws or statutes etc.
