As a long standing Plusnet user (and had very few, if any with their service). I'm considering upgrading to FTTP (the Fibre Cable terminates at the outside wall of my house).
Before upgrading to PN's FTTP I'd like the following simple questions answered:
1) I currently have been allocated by PN a fixed IP address - can I keep this IP address?
2) I've been using PN email (since before it was PN) - can I keep my email account and service with PN or will it be closed?
3) If I was to transfer to a different FTTP supplier could I keep the email account and service on PN?
4) I've always used my own routers (Draytek) and I know how to configure it for FTTP, I don't need PN's router - can I do so?
Some answers to these questions would be most helpful.
Fixed! Go to the fix.

1) yes
2) yes
3) no
4} yes but is your router capable handling the higher FTTP speeds , what model is it ?

1) If it is an upgrade - yes
2)As above - yes
3) No
4) If the router is FTTP capable - yes.

MisterW & jab1
Thanks for your consistent answers; just what I hoped and thought (but nice to have it confirmed by people like yourselves).
Re Draytek router capabilities, I'm actually quiet happy with the performance I get on ADSL2+. I'm only considering going to FTTP since I know at some time in the near future I'll have to when BT withdraws the PSTN network, so a lowish FTTP data rate would be fine but I know my 2862 would be ok with anything sensible I would want (eg x10 what I currently get).
Thanks for your clear and concise answers.

@tobiz yes, the 2862 should be fine up to around 400Mb. Above that you will need to disable QoS and enable hardware NAT acceleration

FTTP and the withdrawal of PSTN are not related.
Broadband will still be provided over copper for any areas not covered by FTTP. ADSL2+ without PSTN is provided as SAODSL (although Plusnet don't appear to offer that as it is the only OpenReach broadband solution available in my area and Plusnet can no longer provide broadband here).
DigitalVoice or any other VoIP solution is transport agnostic, so will work over SOADSL, SOGEA, or FTTP (most VoIP can work over 4G/5G too).

Hi, I’m in the same position as tobiz, so thanks for your answer for him
(and the other responder whose name I can no longer see now I’m writing a reply)
on routers though, in general, What would be the features to cross check fttp router suitability?
eg, I have a Netgear rax300 which is likely ok, but I see you are also looking at the hardware performance & cost of enabling specific features in relation to bandwidth.
Are there any useful router comparison sites if I wanted to upgrade in the future?
Thanks

You're looking for
1) router must have all Gigabit ports ( not a problem with most modern routers )
2) Must have an ethernet WAN port ( to connect to the ONT )
3) have sufficient processing capability to provide the NAT ( Wan->Lan ) throughput for the FTTP product you are considering. Problem is that not many manufacturers will quote figures. If the router has hardware NAT capability then a dual core 1ghz processor can just about handle the 900Mb. Without hardware NAT you need at least double that processing capability. Using QoS will automatically disable any hardware NAT.
4) If you want to get >400Mb over wifi then you need Wifi 6 (or 7) support on both the router and device.
The RAX30 has a triple core 1.5ghz processor, not sure if it has hardware NAT. It will (probably) handle the 900Mb unless you want to use any QoS options. Its Wifi 6 capable.

Hi, thanks for that comprehensive answer.
1) yes
2) yes
3) like you, not sure on hw Nat, but as I am not taking a 900 option, only 500 hopefully won’t be an issue.
I have been using qos, but no real reason on fibre for that.
4) devices that need high bandwidth are typically wired, in general the wireless devices are already 6 or don’t need more than they already have..
many thanks for the speedy response
cheers
simon
