WiFi Calling no longer working after my FTTP upgrade

Got it. Oh dear, it looks like it was me that turned it on and now I see it, I do have a vague recollection of noticing it was turned off and turning it on. If only I'd realised it was going to cause all of this hassle!

The odd thing is that according to the log I turned it on 1 November and it didn't actually stop the Wi-Fi calling from working until I upgraded to FTTP exactly a month later on 1 December. Everything worked fine on my old regular broadband. Why could that be I wonder? Curious. 

Anyway it could be helpful if there were some warnings on the member centre firewall page that setting the firewall too high may affect Wi-Fi Calling. As a superuser could you perhaps suggest that to Plusnet?

@Smack Firewall changes only take effect when the connection is disconnected and reconnected. Sounds like your connection never dropped after the firewall change.  The FTTP upgrade would, of course, drop the connection and thus the firewall change took effect. At least we've got to the bottom of the problem and it doesn't appear that the upgrade was the primary cause of the firewall change.

I'll try but I'm not sure I'd get much traction on changing that since, as I said earlier the firewall is now largely depracated and its default is OFF anyway. The main outcome here is that the community is aware that the firewall can cause Wifi calling to not function, so in future we know to suggest that as a check.

@MisterW Yes that makes sense and makes me feel better. I do think some warnings should be there about the consequences of activating the firewall, I think many peoples reactions to seeing 'firewall' and 'turned off' would be like mine ie to turn it on, then as I obviously did.... promptly forget all about it! I understand now that its usefulness has become questionable in recent times.

@Smack  Pleased to hear that my wild hunch about the Plusnet firewall proved to be the problem. As @MisterW has so eloquently explained the PN firewall is a throwback to the earlier days of the internet using dial up modems. it is really no longer required but still exists and catches people out occasionally. It was the fact that I had to change my firewall config on my router when I got an iphone was a clue that your problem could be a firewall issue.

Wi-Fi calling is so useful if you have a very poor mobile signal at home, which always seems to be the case for me.☹️

@Smack  since there was no Plusnet help team interaction on this thread I've escalated it to make them aware of the effect of the Firewall on Wifi calling. Since you had some interaction with technical support , it would be useful for you to feed back the solution directly to them, by adding to an open 'ticket' if there is one.

I've also mentioned the possible addition to the warning on the Firewall page.
