Re: ipad drops constantly

@Debs59 - sorry to hear it hasn't helped Sad

I'll admit, I'm a bit surprised it hasn't!

Particularly given that I've personally had an iPhone 11 Pro on my own network connected to a Hub One in the past, running this self-same software version, and without any issues.

I have split the bands for you. You will now see two networks when scanning:-

  • PLUSNET-R5P5 - This is the 2.4GHz network. It works better over distance but is slower and more susceptible to interference.
  • PLUSNET-R5P5__5GHz - This is the 5GHz network. It doesn't reach as far but is faster and less susceptible to interference.

I would suggest forgetting the Wi-Fi network from all affected devices and then try each of the above in turn (try 2.4GHz first) and see which, if any, are stable for you.

@Debs59

I understand completely.

But we have made progress: if your iPhone is dropping out, as well as the newer iPad, it means that the problem is not with your Apple kit but elsewhere.

Re: ipad drops constantly

Hi Bob, on 2.4 it drops out. I have now been able to confirm that it drops when ipad has gone into ‘sleep mode’. So when I am actively using it it doesn’t drop. Put it down and go make a coffee, come back and it’s dropped. The same applies for the iphone.  I have just moved the iPad to 5ghz channel. Will get back.

Re: ipad drops constantly

Interesting thread.

I have noticed there are two devices with the same name of 'Samsung'

Could be a red herring but it is not recommended to have devices sharing the same name (hostname) on networks.

Re: ipad drops constantly

Hi Dan, the Samsung devices are 2 TV’s. One downstairs, one up. Nothing has changed since we moved from Sky to plusnet 2 weeks ago. Just the router. i’ve now moved my ipad  to the 5ghz channel Bob has set up. Watch this space.

Re: ipad drops constantly

I know very little about Apple devices but wonder if there is a setting somewhere in newer iOS to disconnect when in sleep mode? I know there is something similar on my Android phone.

Perhaps assigning a fixed IP address might help, something a bit more technical so may not be feasible.

Hope you get it sorted.

Re: ipad drops constantly

Good question, @BlueEagle365 , but having just checked both my phone and iPad, both running the current software, I can't see one.

Re: ipad drops constantly

Another thing it may be worth trying, is resetting the network settings on the two affected Apple devices. There's an option somewhere in the iOS settings to do this I believe.

For info on Bob's suggestion above, see: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204051 - step 7.

Before you do that though, @Debs59 , check that in the Wi-Fi settings that ''Ask to Join Networks" has a tick in the 'Ask' box.

Re: ipad drops constantly

Update: since moving My ipad to 5ghz it has not (yet) dropped. My device is now the only thing on that channel.  The ipad has previously been on 5ghz but sharing with other devices. See screenshot Attached I took yesterday.  My iphone remains on 2.5ghz and continues to drop when entering ‘sleep mode’. It now shares with the 2 samsung tv’s , an android phone and husbands old ipad (that has no connectivity issues at all).

Re: ipad drops constantly

Spoke to soon. Auto join was set on so it gave the appearance of not dropping (ie reconnecting straight away in the background). With auto join set off it dropped as soon as ipad went into sleep mode. I will now go ahead and reset iPad network settings. ……..

Re: ipad drops constantly

@Debs59

I recognise that you don't need this hassle with your iPad but I think that we may be making progress by eliminating possible problems. If you will allow me, I'll try and tie this down a bit more by asking some very detailed questions to make sure we are reading into your words the meanings that you intend?

If I have read this correctly, you are saying that your (newer) iPad (and iPhone) stay in contact with the router while they are being used (on either band). But, if they go into sleep mode, the contact drops. Just to unpick that.

I think that you are saying that if auto join was on one or both do pick up a signal after a bit on being woken up, start working, and stay in contact with the router. Is that correct?

Or do they not connect at all when they are woken up, even if auto join is on?

Or do they lose connection when they are being used?

Or is the problem that once asleep the iPad doesn't respond to something coming in on wifi (such as a WhatsApp message) which should wake it up?

Or, perhaps, you are reporting a delay in seeing the wifi symbol in the top right of the screen (and delay in connecting to the internet) when the units are woken up. But didn't have such a delay with the Sky router.

If, it is that last, don't worry: It is annoying but I have an iPhone connecting to a Hub 1 and, from time to time when I come back into range of the router (for example, if I have been outdoors), it can take a quite noticeable time to pick up the wifi signal (but, if it is asleep within range, WhatsApp wakes it).

Re: ipad drops constantly

@BrightonRock I can see where you are coming from, but my interpretation of @Debs59 's problem is that the devices concerned loose connection to Wi-Fi when they go to sleep, and she has to rejoin the connection manually each time. This should not happen - if you are within range of your home network, the connection to the Hub/router should be maintained constantly.

I did initially wonder if some 'power-saving' settings that told the desktop/laptop to temporarily turn wi-fi off could be an issue, but IF it could be that, all devices would suffer the same fate when put into sleep/standby mode, and this is not happening, only the iPad/iPhone are affected, and they are not leaving the home environment.

I still think the issue is with those individual devices.

Re: ipad drops constantly

Hi guys! Sorry I have had decorators in all day and haven’t been able to spend any time on this. There’s a lot of things for me to answer!  My only update at this point is that with auto connect on it dropped overnight. That could be an anomaly . Update to follow. Jab1 has described the issue perfectly.
