Landline closure?

My understanding, from a staff member post buried deep in this forum, is that migration to BT digital voice will be offered to those who wish to keep their landline.

You need to be clearer, you have to move your broadband account to BT to be able benefit from BT Digital Voice.

Where's the confusion? It looks pretty clear to me. This tells me that BT have decided to rip out the old PSTN network and use the Internet for phone traffic. This is something that they could not do without Government and Ofcom approval. This they have obtained.

Plusnet have cut of my landline phone, in error and say its not possible to reconnect which is a stupid statement as 100 year old tec exchange is just across fields obvious turned off by Open reach have given option of going to BT for double the cost.

A very angry 79year old.

Plusnet changed contract as I had trouble with upgrade my contract had two years to go only later that day realised the phone would be cut off called same day to cancel, 5 days later line ceased,  plusnet  now only offer broadband no digital phone service you have to transfer to BT.

@Mustrum If he did not get a warning that he had to acknowledge, then very much a Plusnet error. Not everyone knows about the desire to switch off the PSTN.

Yes I can transfer to BT for a digital phone and broad band for twice the price !!!

It is indeed unfortunate that you were not aware that you can no longer change products without losing your analogue PSTN phone service. However regardless of who was at fault, your age or your anger, the die is cast and your Plusnet phone service  has gone for ever.

This was inevitable in the next two years, by the end of 2025 it is planned that all normal PSTN line connections will be switched off, it’s just happened a bit earlier than it might of been in this unfortunate case. 
However, the thing that you need to consider now is whether you want to keep your phone number? It will currently be in quarantine but if you want to recover it then.time is of the essence. There is only 30 days from when it was cancelled to when it will be lost forever, regardless of who you choose to provide a ‘landline’ service.

I have for some time been wanting to move my phone service to VOIP, not really a big problem you might think?

Given the pitfalls, loss of broadband, access to existing phone number etc I [think] I’ve decided to go ahead!

I’ve trialled a couple of VOIP suppliers, which worked perfectly and since I’m happy enough with 70mbs broadband I’m thinking of going SOGEA and risk losing my phone number despite the fact that FTTP is available in my area.

Living in an older property my master phone socket is nowhere near a power socket so the disruption that FTTP would cause I’d like to avoid.

As far as I can see changing to SOGEA and then porting my phone number to a VOIP supplier is my best [least disruptive] option.

The question is if I change to SOGEA will there be any [significant] interruption to my broadband? Not worried too much about the phone but my son sometimes and without notice works from home for a day or two so…….

I’m just wondering if SOGEA is a bit short sighted ?

@Batfrog When I was transferred to SoGEA by my ISP (not PN, BTW) there was very little interruption to my FTTC connection - it occurred overnight, and from memory - my error log has been cleared due to a router f/w upgrade - it lasted about 20 minutes.

You need to be very carefull when porting land line numbers as this generally causes an associated broadband to cease.

I suggest that you ask Plusnet support what will happen if this is done after you transfer to SOGEA.
