Re: Movement on PN IPv6

@machare  If you read this thread and relevant links you will find it is a very limited trial for around 20 people, mainly staff. I know that Dave Tomlinson (Plusnet staff) was the first to test it but it didn't work, not heard anything since. Don't think they are looking for other volunteers at the moment.☹️

Re: Movement on PN IPv6

Yes its a pity that so little is said about progress on IPv6, at least we know that its @dave that is the main plusnet staff working on getting IPv6 working, I guess though its only a minor part of his job, and day to day stuff is higher priority.

Think I've said before don't think we'll see much progress on IPv6, it just isn't really on the plus.net radar, isn't needed for their business right now, and doesn't offer much in the way of benefits. Think the only thing that will sway it is if people leave, something I'm reflecting on doing and going to another ISP. But people that are leaving becuase on no IPv6 is only a few dribs and drabs - not really a mass exodus, so it doesn't really affect plusnet.

Its sad, but is what it is. Can't see it changing.

Re: Movement on PN IPv6

I don't see, or hear, the people complaining  about  a lack of progress on IPv6 installations......

Re: Movement on PN IPv6

People that want IPv6 have already made alternative arrangements - either moved ISP or use a tunnel.

If I was Plusnet I wouldn't bother now. Keep the investment minimal, just resell OR's broadband, and profit for as long as possible - when the Plusnet brand no longer works, just drop it and move customers elsewhere.

Re: Movement on PN IPv6

Did we ever hear back for @dave as to what went wrong, when he enabled IPv6 at home. I know he said it was only really the RADIUS that was inside plusnet for light touch customers, so only that really needed to be configured.

On my router I left ppp debugging on, and the IPV6CP configured, so as bringing up the RADIUS connection, I asked for IPv6:

sent [IPV6CP ConfReq id=0x1 <addr fe80::99f2:cf61:1463:36a5>]

But I only ever get back:

IPV6CP: timeout sending Config-Requests

So clearly the far end RADIUS isn't configured to give out IPv6 connections, which I guess we would expect, as we don't have IPv6.

Now know part of the motivation for @dave doing the trial last year on light touch network, was it was simple to do (so cheap) and  he could justify the cost of the trial, from the savings he would make if he decomissened an old machine. So what happened this year, was the money spent last year - so there is no resource to do further trials this year? Does this mean IPv6 is back in the long grass, as there being no funding available to implement?

But don't hold your breath
Was a member for years, but moved from PN fttc to fttp from an AltNet. Getting 940Mb up and down. Happy to stay on here and try to help others. 

Re: Plusnet IPv6 Trial

From what I understand IPV5 (trial or otherwise) is low on BT Consumer Divisions list for the PN brand.

Re: Plusnet IPv6 Trial

@jab1 Is that just your reading from what we have seen last few years, or do you have other direct information (e.g. have you been talking to a horse)?

@summers Let's just say the horse with no name has been 'informative'. 😉

Re: Plusnet IPv6 Trial

@jab1 @summers

I'd need to go looking for it but within the past couple of weeks a link was posted on this forum to a speech given by a PN staffer about IPv6

It was clear from the presentation PN are looking to introduce IPv6 for the bulk of customers next year - all things being well.

The cost of doing so was apparently approved because the work required would lead to the closure of a costly legacy platform.

Re: Plusnet IPv6 Trial

Cheers, @bmc - I saw that, but didn't watch it - meant to, but got distracted. I know the reason it kept being pushed back was the cost, but obviously they have realised that it will, sooner or later, be a necessity.

Re: Plusnet IPv6 Trial

@bmc Yes that was @dave talk before he did the trial, that trial was basically only internal to plus.net staff. From what I recall, @dave was setting up IPv6 on the radius, just for his own home set up. As far as I'm aware, that failed for some reason, and the trial was halted at that stage.

Think things have stalled since then, the trial hasn't been restarted. so @jab1 information is more upto date.
