Hi, my contract ends on 18th April 2023 (next month), I want to switch to a new provider when it does end, do I have to give plusnet 1 month notice before switching

Not unless you are going to move to a cable operator such as Virgin. Otherwise, whatever you do, do not cancel the Plusnet contract. Simply sign up to the new ISP and they will arrange to take over your working line and sort out the cancellation of your Plusnet service.
