I have nearly completed what I need to do in order to migrate away from Plusnet business which is to be discontinued. My final issue concerns my IP address. Plusnet have told me that if I change my contract from business to residential then I will lose my current static IP address, although I can then ask for a new one. I asked why I cannot just keep my current static IP address but was told that it is a business account address and I would need to change to a residential one.
However hopefully this is not relevant and I was only concerned because I did not understand the implications. So I have attempted to educate myself and I think I know the answer. But it would be great to have confirmation from knowledgeable forum members.
The reality is that although I have a domain, I do not have or need a website. Nor do I run any server applications which require a static IP. The only use I make of my domain is for e-mail. Now that I have transferred by domain management to a 3rd party who set up a new e-mail server, I am only using Plusnet for phone and broadband connection, no other services.
The 3rd party provider has set the domain MX record to the new e-mail server, and the A record to my Plusnet static IP. From my research I understand that these two DNS records are effectively independent, so if I lose access to that IP address, either because my contract reverts to dynamic IP or I get a different static IP, it will have no impact on the action of the MX record which redirects e-mails to my domain onto the e-mail server specified in the record.
Is my understanding correct? If I change my contract and Plusnet cancel my static IP and remotely reboots the Hub Two so that it picks up a new dynamic IP address, then there should be no interruption to e-mail?

In which case you dont need a static IP

Correct. If you do request a new static IP, then you just need to change the A record. If you don't get a new one, you should probably change the A record to point at your 3rd party hosting default
Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.
