Confused by renewal - next steps

Hi all, I was hoping if anyone could help with what I hope is a quick query.

My broadband 18 month contract is due up for renewal and in the past 4 or 5 cycles, I have just renewed as it has been the best option.

This time however I have decided to move to another provider for full fibre (currently using part-fibre with a landline - although we don't use the phone). I've had renewals through from plusnet which states my contract ends 25 April and that's when in theory costs go up etc when my contract ends should I not renew.

I'm confused as to when I can get in touch with my intended new provider to get things kicked off and installed from without incurring charges from plusnet from services ending early. I called 2-3 days ago and the agent I spoke to said I shouldn't do anything until 25 April but that seems to mean I'd be paying for two services at the same time and going into the point where my plusnet charges would go up.

Can anyone shed any light on the best next steps to switch?

Re: Confused by renewal - next steps

@Jps1310 It all depends really on how long your new provider says it will take to set up your Full Fibre, which will be a 'best guess' anyway.

If your PN contract ends on 25/04, and you are moving elsewhere for a new connection - which you are, as FTTC and FTTP are supplied differently, my personal suggestion would be to arrange with your new supplier to start from, say, the 20th of April - that way, providing everything went to plan, your Early Termination Charges from PN would be pennies.

Note that if you do this, but don't renew with PN, everything should be simple, but if there are any problems with the new connection, you will not be any loss of service - you will merely pay the out-of-contract price for the days from 25/04 until your new service goes live.

Actually, @Jps1310 , thinking about this, I would set the transfer in motion now - the ETC's would be minimal, and wouldn't be based on the out of contract price, rather, your current contract.

@Jps1310

Does your chosen Ful Fibre provider use the OR network or is it an AltNet with it's one network?

If OR I'd place the order within a couple of weeks as the time taken to install FTTP is always uncertain. The 26th of March looks a good date to jump.

If it's an AltNet then their install is completely independant of of OR and will not touch their equipment so I'd order now.

Re: Confused by renewal - next steps

As I said above, as FTTC and FTTP (whoever provides it) are separate technologies - switching now, given the uncertain timescales, is probably the best idea.
