Why doesn't it make it right, is what I asked. The technology/infrastructure used by ADSL/FTTC is end-of-life, and needs updating - hence why everyone, eventually, will be on a version of FTTP.

If they don't replace the old, worn out and non-repairable old technology, it will become increasingly unreliable. Phone calls can still be made, but it will not be via the old, increasingly antiquated copper circuits, and alarm companies are updating their systems to accommodate the changes, or already have done so.
