Full Fibre External cable from CSP to ONT?

I’ve booked to get upgraded to full fibre next month. Currently my landline/copper fibre connection comes in from the pole, straight down to an upstairs bedroom at the front of the house. My router is also upstairs but at the back of the house connected by an internal cable run I put in.

Expect the CSP box will be installed at the front of the house, is it possible that I can have the ONT box upstairs at the rear of the house (2-bed semi) with external cable run around the outside of the house connecting CSP to ONT?

Failing that I’d need the OSP box upstairs at front of house so I can run an Ethernet cable internally to the rear bedroom where the router lives. Running Ethernet cable from downstairs to upstairs would be very messy if even possible.

Any experience with this would be helpful, thanks

Re: Full Fibre External cable from CSP to ONT?

@troy45 Any external CSP must be installed at ground level, the installation engineer can not splice the Fibre in the CSP at height. It IS possible in some circumstances to install an internal CSP e.g in a loft BUT it must be fully boarded.

My router is also upstairs but at the back of the house connected by an internal cable run I put in.

If the cable is telephone cable, then that will be of no use, the cable from the ONT must be ethernet Cat5e or better.

Note that the ONT requires mains power to be within approx 1m

Re: Full Fibre External cable from CSP to ONT?

Thanks, that confirms one part then.

Would it still be an option for them to run cable back up the front of the house so the ONT can be upstairs also at the front of the house? It can go in the spare room where the current phone line comes in, they’ll have to work up there anyhow to bring the incoming line from the pole down to the CSP. Mains power is available there too.

I’m ok putting in an Ethernet cable to go from ONT to the router replacing the phone line I have now if they’re both upstairs but routing from downstairs to upstairs is a non-starter really

Re: Full Fibre External cable from CSP to ONT?

@troy45 the cable from the CSP to the ONT comes in precut lengths. Its designed to run internally and has a pre-attached plug for the ONT. So that cable is normally routed from the ONT through a hole drilled in the wall adjacent to the CSP and then spliced into the CSP.

You said: "routing from downstairs to upstairs is a non-starter really"

I assume you mean internally?

Would it be practical for you to have the ONT downstairs and run an external grade ethernet cable on the outside of your house  from the ONT to the router instead?

@troy45

There is this kit which is worth knowing about https://shop.premitel.uk/product/fibre-termination-point-relocation-kit/

I did find this Openreach document recently;

https://www.openreach.co.uk/cpportal/products/fibre-broadband/installation-options

not sure if it's valid but it mentions a premium installation  service

I think the best way forward is for you to what dan has suggested.

fibre from pole, to your existing entry point at ground level, and then upgrade the existing cable (which you said you can do) to external cat5e or cat6/cat6a (note that proper cat 6a is a pita to use - its not very bendy).

@troy45

The fact is you won't know until the day of install. You speak to the engineer about what you want to do. In general terms if it's possible they'll work with you to do the install to your satisfaction.

If the ONT does end up at the from there's nothing stopping you from runnning an external ethernet cable from the front, round the back and then in at the desired location. You can get someone in to do this. Not the cheapest option but it is future proof.

The purpose of my post was advise that there is a kit available to extend the fibre cable between the CSP and ONT, not to adopt it's use.

Re: Full Fibre External cable from CSP to ONT?

Thanks all for the advice. I’m going to have to look at this more and possibly see if can discuss with Openreach ahead of the day of installation. I want this to be all up and running when it’s installed so need whatever Ethernet cabling I go with to be in place ahead of install date.

External routing may be an option but not one I’m keen on unless it’s just routed up the front of the house then I can go internal from there. Seems wrong to drill a hole for the fibre coming into the house then another one next to it for Ethernet coming straight out again 😕

"Seems wrong to drill a hole for the fibre coming into the house then another one next to it for Ethernet coming straight out again"

Do you mean having 2 holes?

Are you able to be there yourself when the installation is done? Maybe after the discussion with the installer, you could drill the hole for the fibre, but a bit bigger, so that both the fibre and ethernet cable can fit through the same hole?

Re: Full Fibre External cable from CSP to ONT?

I’m wondering if it’s feasible to have the CSP inside, in the upstairs spare room along with the ONT. Current pole to house the cable comes across immediately above this room - would save taking the incoming fibre down to ground level, they still get to drill a hole in the wall and all the terminations to the box is done working inside rather than at height etc

That would seem to be a suitable compromise?

It is an oft asked question - see Internal CSP and fibre run through loft? : r/openreach and the many other results from a Goggle search.

On notable consideration is that the external "wire" does not comply with internal "wire" fire safety regs.

Cheers I’ll see what googling brings up on the subject
