Re: Moving Home will Router just work ?

Band new build?  "Eco" house has nothing to do with the telecommunications connectivity ... beyond the possibility that it has not been adapted for the UK market if it came in kit form from overseas..

I would suspect that this is an FTTP installation, in which case the router connects via the WAN socket using a standard ethernet cable.

We come back to the unanswered question of which router?  Use this set of links to find out...

Check you router lights

Your router lights can tell you a great deal about what is happening when things are not as they should be. The colour of the lights and their state will tell you all you need to know ... if only you could find the help sheet which came with the router. That information can also be found in the depths of the on-line help & support guides. The following links make the material easier to find.

Re: Moving Home will Router just work ?

So that will require the ethernet cable which was supplied with the router.

You also need to clarify what service is being provided.  The FTTP ONT might well be located in the loft and routed internally.  Such is the responsibility of your building contractor ... which they might have now passed on to you.

More than one ethernet port around the house suggests rather complex internal wiring, which is not the responsibility of either BT nor the ISP.

Hub One can connect via the WAN port, but if this is FTTP above 100mbps, it will not deliver the maximum speed.

You need the other cable which came with the router!

Re: Moving Home will Router just work ?

The phone line is now connected Plusnet say - the service is Unlimited Fibre Extra just as I was on at the old house. There is NO - FTTP in this area as yet.

More photos from in the loft soon.

Re: Moving Home will Router just work ?

That being the case, the router is going to need to be installed in the loft where the circuit comes in.

Are there RJ45 sockets all around the house?

This is starting to sound as though the house has been wired throughout with CAT5/5a/6 ethernet cabling.  The router needs to go wherever all of that cabling comes together.

If that is the case, then you would expect it all, including the BT master socket, to be in a utility cupboard somewhere (rather than the loft) ?Huh

Re: Moving Home will Router just work ?

So there it is in the roof - nearby are two data cables and the aerial cables - not connected. So I could put the router in the loft space - but not too happy about that.

Re: Moving Home will Router just work ?

Not the best of set-ups - are there extensions around the house for the voice side of the service?

Have you put a telephone hand set into that socket to see if the line is live?

If BT have yet to attend site, you could ask them to but a new socket (on a new "drop" wire) where it suits you best.  Will require a hole through somewhere.

Re: Moving Home will Router just work ?

Yes the line is live calls incoming. Broadband is not on yet.

"are there extensions around the house for the voice side of the service?"

No - only the two data ones as shown in photos.

So what to do ? Ive put the cordless base station in the roof that's solved that - (temp)

Re: Moving Home will Router just work ?

You could use one of the data cables, Im assuming they're cat5. Replace one of the wall plates with a phone extension plate or box. If you can detemine the manufacturer of the wall plate your should be able to get a phone socket to replace the RJ45 insert. Then use a single pair of the data cable to connect the extension to the master socket.

Yes, ideally the router shouldnt be connected at an extension but the data cable is cat5 quality so shouldnt be a problem.
