Open Reach Socket for broadband?

I'm sorry if this has already been asked and resolved.

Do engineers still need to drill through the wall or possibly dig up the property if I already have an OpenReach socket installed in the property?

My landlady has just paid a fortune on renovating the property so understandably doesn't want holes drilling or anything.

Thanks.

Re: Open Reach Socket for broadband?

Which service are you thinking of having installed - FTTC or Full Fibre (FTTP)?

Re: Open Reach Socket for broadband?

I'm not entirely sure of the difference, I understand one involves copper cables and a cabinet and the other doesn't. I just want broadband that doesn't involve drilling, haha. In other properties I rented, I never needed an engineer to do that so I assume it was FTTC?

Thanks.

Re: Open Reach Socket for broadband?

We need to know which services are available at the property - does it currently have a phone number? If yes, enter the phone number into this site - https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL, and post a screenshot of the result - obscuring the number. If not, use the address option, but obscure the address and again post the result.

Re: Open Reach Socket for broadband?

I've just moved in so I don't have a number. This is what came up.

Thanks.

Re: Open Reach Socket for broadband?

OK. According to that, you can get FTTC. Do you know if the previous tenants  had a broadband service?

@nchny90

You have a choice of either

VDSL is FTTC

WBC FTTP is FTTP

Re: Open Reach Socket for broadband?

@bmc You are perfectly correct - I totally missed the FTTP option. BUT I suspect that may involve a new entry point, which it sounds like the OP isn't happy about?

Re: Open Reach Socket for broadband?

I'm not sure. Prior to it being renovated it was sat empty for quite a while.

Thanks.

Re: Open Reach Socket for broadband?

In that case even if they did have a service, the number will have been lost, and equipment re-purposed, so it will need re-supplying. I suggest you ask your landlady her thoughts.

Re: Open Reach Socket for broadband?

@nchny90

Just below the results window of the Checker will be narrative about FTTP. Does it say o/h or u/g feed and are any problems expected?

That aside if your landlady is happy to lose her phone service it is entirely possible the fibre feed could come in through the existing coper cable entry point. A small ONT needs to be fitted to the wall (near a power source). As the router is connected via ethernet cable you have reasonable leeway as to where it gets sited.

Have a look here at the OR ONT - https://support.aa.net.uk/Openreach_FTTP_ONT

You need to speak to your landlady to see what see wants. FTTP is better (more resiliant) but PN do not offer a phone service with it.

Re: Open Reach Socket for broadband?

I'll forward all these replies to her and see what she thinks. I personally don't need the phone service but I'll see what she says.

Thank you both so much for your help!

Re: Open Reach Socket for broadband?

@nchny90

Replies are confusing the issue. You are not in a FTTP priority area so my understanding is that you have the choice. You can either sign up for fibre of fibre extra and use the existing BT master socket or sign up for full fibre and have holes drilled and boxes fitted to both internal and external walls. If you want a landline phone then you need to make that clear when you sign up. Plusnet do not offer a digital landline phone service with full fibre and are pushing SOGEA for fibre and fibre extra contracts, which again comes with no phone, so you must get this confirmed.

To confirm availability ring the Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632.

Note, in the future your landlady won’t have the choice, the copper connection will be disabled and full fibre or mobile will be the.only options from any ISP.
