2.4 ghz / 5 ghz teach me

Hi I have a plusnet 1 router and we are on full fibre. The speed is good but my device wanted me to switch to 5ghz wi fi. Do I have this and how do I go about it?

@KatieC33 Welcome to the Community forum.

If you have a Plusnet Hub 2 then yes, you have it The two bands have the same wireless name and password. If it's better than the 2.4GHz band then your connected device should automatically select it. What is the connected device?

Re: 2.4 ghz / 5 ghz teach me

we are on full fibre

Hi, I have a hub 1 ….

@KatieC33 are you sure ? the Hub 1 was never supplied for Full fibre, it can't handle the performance of the higher speed products.

Anyway the Hub 1 has both 2.4ghz & 5ghz networks

Re: 2.4 ghz / 5 ghz teach me

Wonder if @KatieC33 means they are on VDSL - many people have the idea that this is 'Full Fibre', which is why I still prefer FTTC and FTTP/H as descriptors.

Re: 2.4 ghz / 5 ghz teach me

I selected the highest upgrade package available to me I’m pretty sure it said full fibre. We had the pavements dug up to put fibre to the property boundary. But nothing has changed within the property so you tell me…?

@KatieC33 The iPad should automatically select the 5Ghz channel if it is strong enough a signal.

@KatieC33 what Full fibre product are you on ?

The Hub 1 will only support up to 30Mb upload speed!

How do I put an iPad onto 5ghz?

If the Ipad supports 5ghz then it should connect to that automatically.

But nothing has changed within the property so you tell me…?

If you had Full fibre installed , Openreach would install a new little box called an ONT ( Optical network termination ).

If nothing new was installed , then it sounds like you just upgraded to Unlimited Fibre extra which would explain why it was suggested to stay with the Hub 1

@KatieC33 , so you are on Full Fibre/FTTP, but didn't get a Hub2? You were badly advised.

Re: 2.4 ghz / 5 ghz teach me

That's VDSL ( Fibre to the cabinet ) , Unlimited Fibre extra.

If only ISP's hadnt insisted on calling VDSL as 'Fibre' we wouldnt have all this confusion now that 'real' Fibre is available🙄

Anyway, thank you for your help, how can I manually change to the 5ghz channel? The game my son is playing is notifying him to switch.

No , you have what's called SoGEA , its basically FTTC without a phone service, but it still uses the copper line to the cabinet, whereas FTTP has fibre all the way to the house. Sounds like your area has been prepared for FTTP but its not available quite yet.

how can I manually change to the 5ghz channel?

The HUb 1 can be configured with different wifi names for the 2.4 & 5 ghz channels, that will then allow you to manually select which is used. I dont actually have a Hub 1 though, so hopefully someone with a HUb 1 will come along to describe the configuration procedure  ?
