Re: 300 download; 250 on ipad; 70 on laptop; 50 on TV

I will get a 12m cat 8 cable and try it.

Cat 8 is a massive overkill!. Cat5e is fine for Gigabit, if you really want to push the boat out then maybe cat6...

@knappettg

Depending upon exactly which Cat8 cable you go for, you might find something lower spec does the job perfectly well and much easier to route through the conduit. Cat5e and above are specced to 1Gbps.

A few years ago I needed to do similar to you, and bought a Cat6 cable for the job. I found it to be much stiffer than my other Cat5e cables, and difficult to get around bends.

Note, Cat5e - not Cat5, which is only specced to 100Mbps.

Re: 300 download; 250 on ipad; 70 on laptop; 50 on TV

OK. I bought a Cat 8 cable as it was no more expensive than cat 6 and Amazon could deliver this morning. It says it supports performance of up to 2000Mhz and 40Gbps data transmission speed.

Smart TV connected to Hub 2 router port 3 I get 97.52 and 75.28.

PC attached to port 1 is giving 508.93 and 70.83

Ipad over wifi is giving 307.39 and 68.64

Smart TV over Wifi is 79 and 56

Smart TV over wifi before I started fiddling 229 and 75

All using Ookla.

Not sure where I go from here!

Re: 300 download; 250 on ipad; 70 on laptop; 50 on TV

Smart TV connected to Hub 2 router port 3 I get 97.52 and 75.28.

That sounds very much like the TV only has a 100Mb capable ethernet port

See discussions here https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/ndh7cf/are_smart_tvs_all_10100_ethernet_ports/

Smart TV over Wifi is 79 and 56

My guess is that the TV wifi is now connected to the 2.4ghz band rather than the 5ghz

Re: 300 download; 250 on ipad; 70 on laptop; 50 on TV

Both answers correct!

I should have checked the ethernet capability of the TV before I started but they don't make it easy to find - and it is a TCL TV like the person in the link.

The TV reverted to 2.4. Now it is back to 5 my download speeds have increased to 250 over wifi.

Thanks for all your help people.

Wifi faster than ethernet. Who knew!

Re: 300 download; 250 on ipad; 70 on laptop; 50 on TV

In reality I'm not sure there's a need for >100Mb on your TV. Typical 4k streaming only requires around 15Mb and even 8k only needs 50Mb apparently https://www.howtogeek.com/796237/what-internet-speed-do-i-need-for-streaming-services/

I just checked mine ( a 2021 model LG ) and that is only 100Mb according to the router connection info.

Re: 300 download; 250 on ipad; 70 on laptop; 50 on TV

4k enabled Freesat boxes have 100Mb ethernet connections (or so my gigabit capable switch 'tells' me).

These are items of hardware purchased after 2022. I think the manufacture/assembly dates may be after 2021, but tracing/checking it would require disassembly to inspect individual components (and even then...)

Re: 300 download; 250 on ipad; 70 on laptop; 50 on TV

I doubt if many similar pieces of equipment being manufactured today, or even still at the design stage, have Gigabit ethernet ports if 10/100 will suffice.

Bear in mind that whilst the difference in cost between the two components may only be a few pennies, the production runs for the finished equipment is often in the hundreds of thousands, so multiply that up and there are considerable savings, (ie more profit), to be made for the manufacturer. This is true at all price-point levels in the market.

Now repeat that for every other component that can be "down-specc'd" to the minimum required and the savings/profit really mount up.

Having said that, component costs etc don't always have a big effect on the selling price of an item - it is more, "what can we get away with charging?", tempered with cometition between manufacturers etc.

Back in the early 1980s, when the legal CB boom started, the average "rig" sold for around £100 in the shops. One of the many specialist magazines of the day took the lid off one rig and totalled the whole component cost to be around £5 or so!

Obviously there are design costs, manufacturer tooling, packaging, shipping and retail costs to add in, and everyone in the chain needs to make a profit, but just 2-3 years later, when the CB "craze" was fading, those same rigs were selling new, for just £30!
