Accessing USB port on Plusnet Hub2

Hi

I have an issue with my hub2.

When I connect a USB stick to the USB port, I can see the contents on my main desktop which is ethernet cable connected, but on 2 laptops which are wireless, it is not visible. On the  desktop, the shortcut is \\PLUSNETHUBTWO\usb1

The laptops can see the router fine, and access the internet no problem. They can see the shortcut to the hub, but not to the USB port.

I had issues with the SMB2 being disabled, but got round this by reinstalling SMB1 from the Windows / Settings / Features options. SMB2 was not listed as an option. Image attached.

All suggestions welcome.

Re: Accessing USB port on Plusnet Hub2

1) Have you tried accessing the hub2 by it's IP address (eg \\192.168.1.1\....)?

2) Yes, SMB needs to be compatible, and recent windows doesn't want you to use SMB1 (it's not secure) so yes, you'd need to enable on each PC

3) Don't think there's any intrinsic reason that a wifi connected device can't access the USB, BICBW.

What happens, as a test, if you connect those laptops via ethernet?

Re: Accessing USB port on Plusnet Hub2

192.168.1.254/usb1 brings up 403 Forbidden  Illegal filename.

This happens wirelessly and via ethernet cable.

\\PLUSNETHUBTWO\usb1   is the target on the shortcut on the desktop that works.

Hi @ringsoft

Go to network then Right click for map network drive, this will bring up the choice of letter to use and in the box type

\\192.168.1.254\usb1 and search

Hi @ringsoft

Just setup 3 laptops all on wireless using the above and finally using file manager on my android phone did exactly the same and can see and edit all the files on my 2tb hard drive

Re: Accessing USB port on Plusnet Hub2

OK, tried this on my wired desktop and all is fine - on the desktop.

Tried it on laptop (both wired and wireless) can access a drive letter OK, briwsing for a folder just brings up NETWORK and double clicking this does nothing. Tried Z (Same letter as worked on desktop) and Y (in case it didn't like a duplicate), same result.

I give up.

I'll go back to moving files around on foot... I'm old enough to remember floppies so it's not as if it's a hardship   🙂

Thanks for all the suggestions.

@ringsoft

What is your network set to 'Private' or 'Public'. maybe try 'Private'

You will need SMB1 enabled on the devices, if I recall correctly SMB2 is already enabled by default

Re: Accessing USB port on Plusnet Hub2

It was set to Public, tried on private, no change.

I have set up  SMB1 on both the laptops.

Hi @ringsoft

Not sure if reboot is required after smb1 setup but another thought is are all in the same workgroup and presume all sharing is on with each computer, just some thoughts to help out

Re: Accessing USB port on Plusnet Hub2

I've just checked, both windows 10 and 11

I have only enabled SMB1 client

With the network set to 'Public' I am prompted for a username and password

With the network set to 'Private' using "Map a network drive" using \\<my hub two IP address>\usb1 the mapping works.

On the Hubs >Home >My Network I see a connected USB device
