Change Router IP address

I know there is a way of changing IP address of the Hub 2 router.
My question is:
Does changing its IP address have disadvantages and if so what are they vs. any advantages please?

Re: Change Router IP address

The first question I have is - why would you want to change it?

Re: Change Router IP address

I suppose I ought to have added the reason:
I’m changing the SSID too, so thought to change IP address of router at the same time.

Re: Change Router IP address

But why? I can kind of understand changing the SSID, but you gain nothing by altering the Hubs IP.

Re: Change Router IP address

Thanks John
So, zero gain? Nada?!
If so, thanks for the clarification!
Cheers 👍

Re: Change Router IP address

No problem, and as you say, zero gain.

Re: Change Router IP address

A disadvantage I could foresee is if you MANUALLY changed the 'gateway' address on any of your network connected devices (such as printers),  if in the future you ever had to "Factory Reset" your Plusnet Hub then the IP address would revert back to the default - so your manually configured LAN devices would be unreachable until you re-changed the router's LAN IP to the alternative address that you were using.

If your entire home network uses DHCP to get the device addresses, then it shouldn't make much difference

Re: Change Router IP address

Fix

Meant to mention that slight disadvantage and forgot - the same will apply to the SSID change as well.

Excellent point!
Thank you, I get it 👍

Re: Change Router IP address

The only practical reason to want to change the IP address of a router is to add it to a network as a repurposed WAP (with DHCP switched off) so as to not clash with the primary router’s DHCP configuration / operation.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: Change Router IP address

Thank you!
I’m not planning on creating such, so apart from changing my SSID, the router IP address will stay as is.
Cheers to everyone who replied 👍
