Re: Extender/booster for Plusnet 2 Hub

Thanks - done that and there was no blue flash and after a brief pause connected devices returned.

I'll see how it goes this evening and post an update in the morning.

Many thanks for your help

Re: Extender/booster for Plusnet 2 Hub

I had a listen for an hour or so last night and there were only a few dropouts but no severe distortion and breakups that I'd had previously - so a BIG improvement and a grateful thanks from me.

But - I did notice that when one track finished, it could take upto 45 seconds for the next track to begin which is not normal, so something is still not quite right.

Re: Extender/booster for Plusnet 2 Hub

I've tried streaming again this morning and the problems have returned.

Music breaks up and is heavily distorted.

If I pause the stream for 10 seconds and restart it's OK for a short while, then breaks up again.

Any more ideas please?

Here's the channel list when it breaks up-

@pete234356

What device are you using to stream the music, and does it have an ethernet socket?

As suggested by @bmc earlier in this thread' is it possible to use an ethernet cable, at least temporarily to prove it to being a WiFi fault?

Re: Extender/booster for Plusnet 2 Hub

Hi @Mr_Paul The Streamer is a Naim Uniti Atom HE - yes it has an ethernet socket, but the only ethernet cables I have are 1-2metres, so that's no use.

I do see on my PC (that is midway between the router and Atom) that the Killer WIFI on my PC says wifi reception is poor and I should move the router elsewhere, but realistically there's nowhere else to move it to.

I don't have problems browsing etc

@pete234356

Can't you move the streamer closer to the router for a few hours - just to test?

Otherwise, I have no other suggestions.

There is a lot of finger pointing at the Hub, as a test could you create a hotspot on your phone to see if you get the same issue?

Re: Extender/booster for Plusnet 2 Hub

Thank you all, your help and suggestions I really appreciate.

There's no point in moving the Atom closer to the hub unless I move the power amp and the speakers - which weigh 110lbs each, so that's not practical. The Atom HE is just a pre-amplifier.

However I do also have a Majority Quadriga streamer in the Kitchen - barely 2m from the router which also has exactly the same problems when streaming

I can easily move that next to the router and use an ethernet cable. I've done this before when I had the same problem with the TP-Link router a few years ago. When using the cable there are no streaming problems whatsoever.

I'm happy to do that again, but I think the point has already been proven.

This is not a recent problem - I originally had the same issue more than 10 yrs ago when I tried streaming from my PC to a Roberts Stream radio in the kitchen - approx 3m away. It was so bad I never bothered again and never tried since.

Only the other day I subscribed to Idagio so I really want to get streaming working.

@pete234356

The cheapest and most reliable option will always be Ethernet.

It might be a pain to install but once it's done it's there for the future. With moderate DIY skills it's not difficult to install Ethernet cable terminated in fixed outlets, which make a professional job of it. The cable is no thicker than telephone extension cable,

Re: Extender/booster for Plusnet 2 Hub

Cheers @Baldrick1

It's something I could have done when I had the entire house refurbished 3 years ago, but thinking that wireless would work well  these days, I didn't.

All the floors have been laid and all skirting etc replaced, so I really don't want to start tacking wire around.

Would a booster not help in your opinion?

Re: Extender/booster for Plusnet 2 Hub

@pete234356

I have little faith in boosters. I would try using Powerline devices to send the Ethernet data over the mains wiring. If the two sockets are on the same circuit they can work very well. See https://community.plus.net/t5/Tech-Help-Software-Hardware-etc/Powerline-Unit-Performance/m-p/1607450...

If you're going to try power lines then go for the gigabit ones https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-PA717-KIT-Powerline-Configuration/dp/B07G37DJ8R

Re: Extender/booster for Plusnet 2 Hub

Thanks guys.

I hadn't thought of that approach.

I had the house rewired when it was being refurbished and all of the ground floor sockets (except the kitchen) are on the same circuit, so hopefully I'm in with a chance using that adaptor.

I've just asked my question on the Naim Forum too to see what advice I'll get there.

The Atom is a well respected bit of streaming kit so I've asked how other Atom users achieve streaming.

I am really surprised that wifi streaming still doesn't work reliably in this day and age.

On TV we see families all streaming films and playing games on their mobiles and tablets yet I can't even get a single music stream working reliably. I have friends with Roon and speakers installed all over their house which works perfectly.

When I visited dealers to listen to streaming preamplifiers - they all worked fine with wifi and no breakup.

I just don't understand why I'm having such problems.

I'll update when I get some answers from the Naim Forum

Once again - many thanks to all.
