I discovered this thread only after discovering my 5ghz signal was faulty on my plustnet hub.

 

I have had the hub and plusnet for ages, today was the first time i encountered the issue, i kept having skype calls repeatedly drop, i utilised a program called WirelessNetView http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_network_view.html to investigate my wireless signal. The RSSI for the 5GHz signal was -70, my 2.4Ghz signal was -46. 

 

My laptop is almost in direct line of sight of the router, a wooden door partly obscures it.

 

I swapped my laptop to the 2,4Ghz signal and my connection improved drammaticaly. 

 

My plusnet hub is running the latest firmware.

Just had a 45 minute call to Plusnet after losing patience last night regarding my WiFi. Spoke to technical support and cutting a 45 minute story short, he was not aware of any problems with the router, could confirm I have the software that is not the version generally distributed. He has escalated the problem. Read, I am back to square 1 and the left hand is not aware of what the right hand is doing.

5Ghz Channel keeps losing internet

Hi, had to split the WiFi channels to the 2.4 and 5ghz frequencies as my phone doesn’t work if they’re not separate, I did this when I got the router nearly 12 months ago and had no issues at all.

In the last month the 5Ghz Channel keeps losing access to the internet, and then demanding a password to be reentered (which it doesn’t recognise) and only a reboot of the router will sort this out.

The 2.4ghz channel still works and has internet access

Hi, had the router for about a year, split the signals when first got it because my phone (iphone8plus) didn’t like the dual band and kept getting its knickers in a twist, which it did with the BT router previously.

Anyway, 5ghz internet connection started dropping out a month ago and only a router reboot will fix it

Since Bob put the test firmware on my hub1, the 5ghz channel has not dropped yet, but needless to say we do not know the actual cause, although there appear to be a few suggestions. My set up is

Router connected via Ethernet to a 5 port gigabit switch that feeds the skyq box, the Blu-ray player and a tp link home plug. This home plug connects my son's desktop to the router. 

Wireless are 4.android phones, 2 android tablets 2 laptops, 1 smart tv and a multifunction printer.  Various other family phones are also registered and connect when they visit. Wireless a mixture of 2.4 and 5 GHz devices. All that support 5ghz are currently set to connect to this. 

The bands are split.

I also have a separate 5ghz mesh network connecting the sky main box to the mini box, set up during the sky q install. I was going to connect the mini box via Ethernet, but have left it as yet. Maybe this has some causative factor??????.

All devices on dhcp with a standard lease time. Therefore the router us as such, setup out of the box with no significant changes, apart from splitting the bands.  So although currently the issues have gone I don't feel we are any further on with diagnosing the problem.... What was altered in this new firmware and I am happy to test any theory's....

As I was directed by Plusnet to this thread I'll carry on.
About 5 days ago speed tests indicated that my 2.4 GHz steam wa operating at about 25% expected speed, that revelation came about after another total dropout, including 5GHz stream and talking to support. Will not go into details save to say he knew nothing about the router problems. Anyway a new hub1 is on its way. However, after doing nothing the 2.4GHz stream is now operating at expected speed.
Now today, dropout again and log says

In a follow up to posts 159 & 166, the switch to the BT business 6 has resulted in nearly 2 weeks of trouble free use and the range and speeds are better.

There have been no other network changes.

This to me is pretty conclusive proof that the Hub 1 was the cause of the months of the problems I listed.

Which I strongly recommend you do not install. You are currently running a non-standard firmware that mitigates the issues described in this thread. You are the only customer so far who has been given this opportunity yet continues to report problems. This is one of the reasons I think your latest observations are down to something else. There's also the added complexity of the additional Wi-Fi access points you have installed on your network.

These logs follow a physical PPP disconnect/reconnect which has nothing to do with your Wi-Fi connection. The topmost log entries show a wired device renewing it's DHCP lease, and those below it show communication with our hardware management platform (something that happens every time your Internet connection disconnects/reconnects).

@welshi3, sounds like your case might also be unrelated.

Are Plusnet working on some sort of compensation for customers who have been without a consistent service and who have had to mess with settings and ditch 5ghz wifi to get any wireless service. If this was a problem over a weekend I can see how it could be written off as just one of those things but there seems no end to this router issue in sight after weeks...

I am struggling but I have to make sure I have got this right. Can this be put in non technical language. What has disconnected and reconnected. If it is the incoming feed them this is the second reported drop recently.

Don't you think that the customer facing telephone guys should know about a potential problem with the routers as certainly the person who I spoke to had no idea.

When the speed of my 5GHz and 2.4GHz streams were checked on 2 different devices only 2m from the router the 2.4GHz stream was showing operating at about 25% of what was expected, hence forwarding a router. Now a few days later, running the same test all running the expected speed. What's changed. Certainly nothing here.

As I wrote this my echo has just stopped again.

I have no problem removing the 'additional WiFi access points' if this leads to pointing to the problem

When my WiFi speed is crawling I am now reduced to switching off my WiFi on my phone and connecting through 4G. Download speeds are double, upload speeds are 30% faster measured using the app as recommended by plusnet.

@briston, a PPP drop means your physical Internet connection dropped i.e. nothing to do with the Wi-Fi. I don't mean to come across dismissive, but I'm really keen this thread is kept to the issue at hand.

No problem. I'll keep away but do consider it was a email from plusnet which directed me here.
Ops dropout on my echo and note only using my hub1., No other network in the house at the moment.
Also consider it was plusnet who considered I should try another router only to be told don't. At the moment the 2.4GHz stream is crawling, yes it is 06.17 using 24hr clock. 1.09Mbs down, 2.76Mbs up and yes I do have it the correct way round. The upload speed is more than twice the download and both are low, if not pathetic. If I knew how to attach a screen shot I would attach the results of the test using the app advised by plusnet. You are correct, this does is nothing too do with the 5GHz problem which has been going on since 10.02.19, nearly 1 year. But actually, is it anything to do with the 5GHz problem? The problem is to do with the router, and manifests on the 5GHz stream. Are the symptoms being shown elsewhere? I have now shown I have drops on my line incoming, or is the router dropping it, only understanding this because I ask questions but quite honestly who do I ask because there is no coordinated response because differing people are giving differing answers because no one knows what the other is saying.
I will telephone later this morning.

Sorry Bob, 1 last post here. I did telephone as the 2.4GHz stream was down to kbs not even 1Mbs and it was suggested I purchase a
TP-LINK TL-WR940N WiFi Cable & Fibre Router - N450, Single-band
Product code: 227992 from pc world. Advertised as
For standard internet connections
N450
Ideal for low internet use
Single-band (2.4 GHz)
And plusnet will refund the £24.99.
Well that will get rid of the 5GHz problem won't it.
