Hub Two scheduled restart

I am aware that it can be useful to re-boot the router now and again. I can see how to do that manually, but is there a way of scheduling an automatic reboot say every 2 weeks at 3 am?

Re: Hub Two scheduled restart

There isn't a way to do this within the UI.

But what are the perceived benefits of restarting it?
I've not restarted mine in a year and it's still working without issue.

Re: Hub Two scheduled restart

I think it's like so many electronic devices - restart it occasionally and it clears out old files, bits and pieces and maybe updates itself.

AI told me this. It doesn't want to copy/paste neatly, but you'll get the idea.

Restarting a router occasionally is useful for several key reasons related to performance, connectivity, and security:

  • Clearing Memory and Improving Speed: Routers function like mini computers with processors and memory. Over time, running continuously and handling many devices and data requests can fill up their memory, causing them to slow down. Restarting clears this memory, freeing up resources and restoring faster internet speeds

  • .

  • Resolving Connectivity Issues: Rebooting can fix bugs, software glitches, IP address conflicts, and overheating problems that may cause slow or dropped Wi-Fi connections. It essentially gives the router a fresh start, often resolving dead zones or range limits in the Wi-Fi coverage

  • .

  • Enhancing Cybersecurity: Each reboot can install the latest firmware updates and operating system patches, which help defend against cyberattacks. Additionally, rebooting often changes your public IP address, making it harder for hackers to exploit a previously known address to access your network

  • .

  • Channel Optimization: Wi-Fi routers operate on frequency channels that can become congested, especially in crowded areas. Restarting allows the router to rescan and select less crowded channels, improving wireless performance

  • .

  • Preventing Overheating: A reboot cuts power briefly, allowing the router to cool down, which can improve its stability and performance

In summary, rebooting your router regularly helps maintain a fast, stable, and secure internet connection by clearing memory, fixing software issues, updating security, optimizing Wi-Fi channels, and preventing overheating.

@Brian5

You could use a digital plug-in mains timer.

There are many to choose from which allow weekly switching periods, but IDK if fortnightly (or even monthly) ones are available.

Re: Hub Two scheduled restart

Some of those certainly don't apply to the Hub 2 - for example, if there is a new firmware it will download and automatically install and reboot if necessary.

Re: Hub Two scheduled restart

I would prefer to set up a reminder at say monthly intervals on my PC calendar. More flexible.

Excellent question .

Another "theory" is that electronic things are more likely to break when turned on and off.

On many networks, the last thing that needs a "housekeeping" reboot is the modem/router. A Windows PC, for example, is more likely to suffer from clutter than a modem/router.

A better approach might be to leave well alone until you spot a problem.

Fine, if that fits with your 3am requirement. Thumbs_Up

Re: Hub Two scheduled restart

Another option would be a smart plug with a routine to turn it off and on again.
Could also wake up at 3am and tell yhe smart speaker to turn it off. Only problem then s you cannot tell it to turn it on again as no Internet connection.
