Re: New FTTP 500Mbps

Does the laptop's CPU utilisation hit 100% when doing any speed test ?, as something is limiting it's network throughput !

Re: New FTTP 500Mbps

Just been fiddling with Billion router & it appears the ethernet ports are only rated for 100Mbs!

Why do you think that ?

The spec says four 1Gb ports, and on the back of the unit under the ports it says "Gigabit Ethernet"

What with your laptop also failing to achieve 500Mbps when directly connected, this still sounds like dodgy cables.

What colour are the front panel Ethernet 1,2,3,4 LEDs when you have a cable plugged in to your laptop's network port ?

but its good for 1Gbps

@MrPork it might have ports that are physicallly capable of 1Gb BUT it doesnt have sufficient processing power to route >400Mb from WAN to LAN. It was fine with an FTTC connection where the WAN speed was max 80Mb but it wont cope with an FTTP connection above 400Mb

@MisterW

The Billion 7800DXL isn't VDSL capable, but was a very good ADSL2+ modem/router.

Your point is even more valid !.

Re: New FTTP 500Mbps

@MrPork

What version of firmware is your 7800DXL running ?

It can be found as "Software Version" on the page that looks like this -

Re: New FTTP 500Mbps

Firmware is the latest.

Internal port settings list the ethernet ports as 100Mbs, I can't set them any higher.

Re: New FTTP 500Mbps

That screenshot is just saying that what is connected is either a 100Mbps cable, or the distant device is 100Mbps.

The speed is determined by what is negotiated when a ethernet cable and distant device are connected.

It is showing you 100Mb port speeds because something connected isn't 1Gbit capable.

What colour are the 7800DXL's front panel Ethernet 1,2,3,4 LEDs when you have your laptop's 1Gb network socket connected to each of the router's corresponding ethernet ports ?

Re: New FTTP 500Mbps

Clearly the current router is not up to spec, is there any point to this if the Billion is going to be replaced?

Probably not, but something here is way off, and something a simple as a faulty cable might be an easy fix.

Searching the internet, indicates that some retailers were quoting the EWAN to LAN path as capable of 600Mbps in their sales literature, but more commonly users are reporting the throughput limits somewhere around 400Mbps (and therefore not restricted by 100Mbps ethernet ports).

Based on available test reviews and discussions regarding the Billion BiPAC 7800DXL, the maximum throughput from the EWAN (Ethernet Wide Area Network) port to the LAN (Local Area Network) ports is approximately **400 Mbps**. This figure comes from user reports and tests shared on forums, such as the Billion UK Forum, where a user with a gigabit uncontended line reported achieving transfer rates of around 400 Mbps when using the 7800DXL as a router with the internet connection routed through the EWAN port to the LAN ports. Another contributor confirmed that their testing showed an average EWAN throughput of around 400 Mbps for the 7800DXL, suggesting this is close to the device's practical limit under typical conditions.

While the 7800DXL is equipped with Gigabit Ethernet ports (capable of 1 Gbps theoretically) and is marketed as supporting high WAN throughput for fibre connections, real-world tests indicate it doesn't fully reach gigabit speeds from EWAN to LAN. For comparison, when the same user bypassed the router and connected directly to their PC, they achieved approximately 970 Mbps, highlighting that the 7800DXL's hardware or firmware imposes a bottleneck, likely capping at around 400 Mbps in this configuration.

No higher throughput figures exceeding 400 Mbps from EWAN to LAN were consistently reported in accessible reviews or test data for the 7800DXL. This suggests that, despite its Gigabit-capable ports, the router’s processing power or internal architecture limits its maximum throughput to this level under typical test conditions. If you're seeking higher speeds, a more powerful router might be required, as noted in some discussions.

Anyway, I give up as this discussion is going nowhere !

Up to a point ... there is no guarantee a replacement router will fix any local network capacity issue ( cable/network config etc) and as is frequently the case these days, a move to higher FTTP speeds can expose the limitations of the local network not previously seen.

We know that the 7800dxl should be capable of around 400mbs via EWAN , so once @MrPork has achieved near that level of throughput it's worth considering a replacement router.

You can check out but you can never leave ( easily)

Re: New FTTP 500Mbps

@MrPork

I'd get onto PN first and get a Hub2.

If that provides the required speeds then you can consider a new router with the bells and whistles you may need.

Re: New FTTP 500Mbps

@Protech

Not disagreeing with you or @outcast but a router with an known performance for testing would be something plusnet would require for any fault diagnosis, so a Hub two is essential here.

Any continuation of testing with a low performance router could end up with the conclusion that the router is not up to spec

Re: New FTTP 500Mbps

@MrPork phone up pn, and ask for the router that you paid for.

That way, pn can help you diagnosing the issue if need be.

Then when you are on the right speed, (or near enough) you can choose and wait to buy the best router in your budget range.
