New User pending activation

Hi all,

We're due to go live tomorrow and given we both work from home and i run umpteen different services (for example, ADSB flight tracking on adsb.2e0veb.com) i'd like my system to switch over with as little "to do" in the morning as possible and all my devices to pickup their wired or wifi connection.

Wanted to dig out the new plusnet router and do the following, wonder if anyone can advise if this will cause any issues with activation or if my efforts will be undone by any reset it performs at activation.

1. Ensure the router has the ip address 192.168.0.1 as this is my gateway ip. This may be a default for this router but i have no idea.

2. Setup our existing wifi networks with same SSID and password so we don't need to change anything on our client devices.

3. Activate my static IP. This option doesn't seem to work at present, as expected as we aren't live yet - will this be available soon after ativation so i'm able to point my domains back to where they need to be? Use a dynamic dns tool to feed this to my name servers at present but would prefer my static ip was active from day one.

4. Disable DHCP server on the router as we run our own.

Thanks!

Re: New User pending activation

@2E0VEB welcome to the community

For the Hub Two the default IP Address of the Hub is 192.168.1.254/24

To change the IP Address and turn off DHCP you navigate from the home page to

Advanced settings >My network >IPv4 configuration.

To change the wireless SSID

Advanced settings >Wireless

The static public IP address forms part of your broadband user account and is configured when the account connects to the management server (TR069). There is no manual configuration required.

Thanks Dan, really helpful info.

Think i'll do all this later today and leave the router connected for activation overnight..

All being well we should have minimal downtime.

@2E0VEB I'm afraid you won't be able to request a static IP until the account is active. The automated activation of a static IP from the member centre is broken, you will need to request its activated by calling the CSC or waiting for a staff member to respond on here.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Thanks, thought i'd seen it mentioned there was an issue with provisioning statics through the system so will keep that in mind.

Thanks for the info Smiley

@2E0VEB

You say you have a router what make and model is it, how is it configured for you current provider? The Hub Two can be configured as a modem only device (Bridge Mode) provided the router has everything you require and supports a PPPoE connection it might be a better option for you rather than having two routers.

@2E0VEB

Not wishing to pour cold water on your expectations of a fast seamless transfer but...

The way I think that it works is:

1. Openreach do their stuff.

2. Openreach report to Plusnet that the transfer is complete.

3. On receipt of this notification, Plusnet activate the account. Until this last step is completed you might get synchronisation but no Internet service.

4. Plusnet advise you that the service is up and running.

There can be anything from a very short delay, up until, in the extreme, midnight on the transfer day. If you find that there is a break in service then it might be worth ringing Plusnet/reporting here.

Re: New User pending activation

Thanks yeah so we're moving from Sky with their abysmal router.

The (Sky) router doesn't allow a full "bridge" mode setting so is only used to serve wifi, connect to my wired network and provide the connection to the net.

DHCP and Spam filters are managed by a docker container running Pi-Hole.

We're also running a reverse proxy with Nginx, also in a container routing incoming traffic.

Dare say we'll make some changes now we have more functionality on the firewall rules side of things and can finally specify the network-wide DNS settings (couldn't do that with Sky).

My hope is, to avoid to the extent possible, having to make any tweaks when i first get up tomorrow, don't really want to spend my first x mins of the day configuring stuff and like to keep the uptime on some self-hosted stuff as close to 100% as possible.

Re: New User pending activation

Thanks @Baldrick1 - Interesting to hear the process outlined!

We have some backup options in extremis so we can still work, just migrated our mobiles over to a new provider so have plenty of allowance for tethering if need be!

I *think* i've now configured the hub to pretty much work when it activates but there'll always be a couple of little things to amend when that happens.
