PPPoE no response to PADI

I have been using a Mikrotik router for some time to connect to Plusnet.

Several weeks ago, following a firmware update and reboot I couldn't get the PPP session to establish. Reverting the firmware made no different (v7.8/v7.6). I ended up digging out an old OpenWrt Plusnet Hub and have been using that for a while until I've had chance to look.

Today, I tried to use the Mikrotik again.

- I shutdown the PPPoE on the OpenWRT device, to cleanly terminate the PPP session

- I connected up an ECI OpenReach modem, which obtained sync

- I connected up my Mikrotik again

Running a packet capture for the interface pointing towards the ECI modem, I see the outbound PPP PADI messages - but nothing back. I have also tried with a VDSL SFP that I've used previously, but experience the same issue.

Re-connecting the OpenWRT router directly brings up the PPP session quickly.

12:53:13 pppoe,debug,packet VLAN-VDSL: sent PADI to FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
12:53:13 pppoe,debug,packet session-id=0x0000
12:53:13 pppoe,debug,packet host-uniq=0x6a0009
12:53:13 pppoe,debug,packet service-name=
12:53:13 pppoe,debug,packet ppp-max-payload=1500

Is anyone from Plusnet able to confirm if there's some long timeout plusnet/OR side? - Or what RADIUS traffic you/OR saw from me between 12:50 and 13:15 today?

Thanks!

I don't have visibility of the OR leg, but there was nothing Plusnet side between the two events below: -

Tue Mar 14 13:12:33 2023 : Info: rlm_linelog: Received accounting request for [REDACTED]@plusdsl.net (NAS 213.1.164.38, CSID [REDACTED], IP unknown) - START (Pre-auth tunnel setup)

Tue Mar 14 12:43:02 2023 : Info: rlm_linelog: Received accounting request for [REDACTED]@plusdsl.net (NAS 213.1.164.38, CSID [REDACTED], IP unknown) - STOP (Pre-auth tunnel setup)

Not quite the same circumstances, but I wonder if this is in some way related?

12:53:13 pppoe,debug,packet VLAN-VDSL

the vlan-vdsl worries me, you haven't got a vlan id enabled on the wan connection have you ?

The eci modem will handle the vlan id required for fttc. Having it enabled on the router will cause problems
