PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

Exactly as the title really. Could be 3-4 times in an hour or it could go 8 hours without any issues.
Lights on the front of the router go green, blue then to flashing orange for a while before going back to green then blue.

I'd usually consider myself fairly tech minded but this is a bit beyond me so please go gentle 😁.

Thanks in advance.

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

Hi Nick, have you made any recent changes to your network prior to commencement of the problem? Changed any cabling etc. or introduced any new devices to the network?

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

Nope none whatsoever. About 12 days ago it just started rebooting. I've had a look at the router log and it has nothing before the reboot it just restarts.

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

I'd typically ask that you try a factory reset at this stage, but given I'll probably not be around to see the results (I'm out of the country for a couple of weeks after today), then I've arranged for a replacement to be shipped to you. Might take a little longer than usual due to the Royal Mail strikes.

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

this happens quite a lot with our router as well, it goes through periods where it is really stable then periods where it is restarting 3-4 times a day - no additions or reconfigurations.  my only caveat is that we live in a village with (I understand) older copper telephone wiring, so the infrastructure isn't very good!  I'll try the factory reset but if that doesn't work do you think it's worth trying a new router?  thanks, Mark

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

Does the light on the front of your router turn green by itself?

Let me know how the factory reset goes.

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

thanks for responding - it only turns green if I deliberately switch it off and on again, otherwise it goes straight from blue to flashing orange; solid orange; solid orange with broadband light then back to blue.  So I was probably wrong to state it 'restarted' itself, more a reset after a loss of signal?  I did a factory reset over midday so let's see how it goes!

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

Yeah it might not be a router fault in that case although it could still be.

I've tested your line and the tests are showing a "high resistance fault". Is the router plugged into the master telephone socket with no extension cabling between the router and the socket?

Also what type of master socket do you have?

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

Wow some service! I'm impressed!  the Master Socket is a single socket with a micro-filter attached, which splits the router and phone line.  I have replaced the micro-filter a couple of times as had read that they can be a point of failure.  a quick read of the BT guide to master sockets suggests I have to have a micro-filter?

the cable from the micro-filter to the router runs across the bottom of a window to extend it to where the power sockets are, a distance of approx 6ft.

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

Cheers! Yeah if you have a single socket you'll need a microfilter.

Is the 6ft cable something we've provided or a cable you've bought? Seems a bit long for a cable we'd provide. Buying your own cable is fine but in my experience the longer this type of cable the more chance of something going wrong.

I find that using a power extension lead is better.

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

Interesting, never really thought there may be an issue with the cable - I don’t think you supplied it, what is a power extension cable? ie is there one you recommend? If it needs a power supply there isn’t one near the master socket, otherwise that’s where the router would be situated. Thanks!

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

Ah sorry by power extension I'm meaning one of these things if the mains socket is too far from the telephone socket.

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

ha ha of course - sorry thought there was some new power-boosting cable I didn't know about!  I might try moving it, the situation is not helped by a radiator that sits under the window that heats everything up - I specifically sited the router away from the radiator but unfortunately can't move the master socket.

Re: PlusNet Router keeps rebooting

Haha I'll admit I was sat here thinking what do I call one of those things and eventually settled on "power extension lead".

Yeah it'd be a good help if you could move it and use the shorter cable we've sent even if temporarily then let me know and I can retest your line to check if the high resistance fault has gone away.

I'll be out of the office from 6:30pm tonight until Sunday at 11:30am btw though.
