Port 44158 for Helium hotspot not working

HI,

I have "opened port" 44158 using the port forwarding method for the miner, i have set it for both TCP & UDP (file attached).

However the hot-spot is still being relayed and the online checker https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports shows the port as closed.

I have also changed the firewall in the member centres as this was suggested in another post on this topic.

Any additional advice on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated

Re: Port 44158 for Helium hotspot not working

Hi @Luke3 welcome to the forum

Have you setup the device (host) the port forward rule is needed for? It would look something like this.

Screenshot 2022-02-05 172104.png

The device running hellium needs to be up and working (listening) for the connection, can you connect to the hellium device locally?

Dan.

Re: Port 44158 for Helium hotspot not working

I can connect to the device using the method shown in this post

Re: Port 44158 for Helium hotspot not working

That is a sucessful telnet connection.

Provided your members centre firewall is turned OFF it should work.

Not used hellium myself, how do you setup device to listen on the internet?

Re: Port 44158 for Helium hotspot not working

Hi Dan,

The firewall is off on the member centre.

The device itself is already set-up and you simply download an app and connect it to the internet and it just does everything itself.  The device being used can be seen here: https://store.rakwireless.com/products/rak-hotspot-v2

The Hotspot is "relayed" and it is recommended to open port 44158 to stop this relay

Re: Port 44158 for Helium hotspot not working

Thanks for the link.

On the port forwading page of you hub one do you see

Screenshot 2022-02-05 181203.png

The IP address needs to be the one helium device is using or the device name found in the DHCP list.

If you look at the event log do you see any connection attempts being made to the helium device?

Advanced Settings >Trobleshooting >Event Log

IN: ACCEPT [57] Connection closed (Port Forwarding: TCP [192.168.1.141]:44158 <--> [MY BROADBAND IP]:44158 - - - [198.199.98.246]:51952 CLOSED/SYN_SENT ppp3 NAPT)

closed/syn_sent is because I don't have a device active on that port.

Dan

Re: Port 44158 for Helium hotspot not working

File attached showing the port forwarding page.

I do not really understand your second section. When I go to the event log, the data just seems to be me discounting/reconnecting with devices & leases being renewed. They are also from several days ago (file also attached for a better explanation).  If i select port forwarding on the category drop down then nothing shows up.

Re: Port 44158 for Helium hotspot not working

I have found what i think you were referring to, there does not seem to be anything there for port 44158, but there are some opening & closing of other ports.  The log is only 1min long so 44158 could of been required at a different time.

Re: Port 44158 for Helium hotspot not working

In the event log select catergory 'firewall' and then try testing the connection with http://www.canyouseeme.org/ on port 44158

hopefully you should get a record of the connection attempt.

If you don't the members centre firewall might be blocking connections still or the testing IP address is wrong.

There is an issue with the members firewall, it's a long thread but the issue is not resolved.

Re: Port 44158 for Helium hotspot not working

Hi Dan,

I have tried the website and the receiving a connection time out. My events log appears to be from 30th August for some reason so I couldn't even see an attempt if it was working correctly.

Based on the thread you posted it seems that this is my issue, I recently called plusnet to change my firewall to low and they said that they was not allowed to do so and i have to do it on the members centre, so it seems I must be seeing it set as off where it is still set as high.

Many thanks for your assistance on this matter, seems I will have to call plus net again & change to Virgin.

Re: Port 44158 for Helium hotspot not working

Hi @Luke3

I'm really sorry to see you're having issues opening a particular port.

I've made some changes this side which should hopefully resolve the issue.

Can you turn your router off for 5 mins then back on and let me know how it goes?

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Hi @Gandalf

The port is now shown as open, thanks for your assistance.
