Slow speeds with Router Wifi to laptop

Hello,

I'm having difficulty with a slow wifi connection to my laptop.

I have a 145Mbs connection and that is the speed the router receives.

These speed tests were conducted a meter and a half from the Router with no obstructions.

Connected via my phone through Wifi it's 145Mbs.

Connected via an Ethernet cable to the laptop its 145Mbs.

If I hot spot my phone with the Wifi and connect my laptop to the phone its 145 Mbs.

Connected to a friends 200Mbs connection through their wifi with my laptop the speed is 200Mbs.

When I connect the Laptop via Wifi the connection is consistently 37.5Mbs.

I have swapped from 5ghz to 2.4ghz in the device manager of my network card with no change .

I've changed the wifi channels in the router with no difference.

I've updated my Laptops Network card.

I've went into the Device manager and changed the 802.11a/b/g Wireless mode and 802.11n/ac/ax Wireless mode with no change.

Some of these changes with slow the connection down. The highest speed my laptop gets through the routers wifi is 37.5Mbs

My Laptop Network monitoring software tells me the Laptop has more advanced Wi-Fi capabilities  (AX) than the router (N) and suggests changing the Router.

The Router is a Plusnet Hub Two

My Laptops network adapter is a Killer(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX1650x 160MHz Wireless Network Adapter (200NGW)

Does anyone know how to remedy this or perhaps so me suggestion on possible fixes I could try.

Thank you for your time.

Re: Slow speeds with Router Wifi to laptop

Hello,

I have Indeed, reset the hub two, and tried restarting the hub two and turning the power on and off the open reach box.

The problem still persists.

Can you switch off 802.11a/b/g Wireless mode in your laptop and at the same time switch off 2.5GHz WiFi in the Plusnet router?

Re: Slow speeds with Router Wifi to laptop

The Hub Two is n, ac ... but remember that ac is 5GHz only - see What's the difference between 802.11ac vs. 802.11ax? | TechTarget

Also look at inSIDDer to see what the Wi-Fi spectrum looks like and the speed of the bands.  My 2.5GHz band is much faster (216mbps) than my 5GHz band (54mbps)!!  Even though the 2.4GHz signal is also stronger, my HP laptop seems to prefer to connect to the 5GHz signal.

Re: Slow speeds with Router Wifi to laptop

Hello, I tried this.

from my device managers network card properties, i cannot fully switch off 802.11a/b/g only swap it to different settings. So when turning off 2.4Ghz in the router, I put it to 2.4Ghz, effectively I could not connect via 2.4Ghz. It had no effect on the current 37.5 maximum, I also tried the same switching 5Ghz off to the same effect.

Re: Slow speeds with Router Wifi to laptop

Hello, I had a look at inSIDDer.

My signals are good.

Max 2.4Ghz is 216.7Mbps

Max 5Ghz is 1733.3 Mbps

Re: Slow speeds with Router Wifi to laptop

Check the MTU on your laptop, and try lowering it a bit (or as an experiment a lot, say to 1300). Sometimes something on the path supports a lower than usual MTU - such as when you use a VPN or L2TP tunnel as they have an overhead of a few words per packet. If oversize packets are dropped then you get packet loss and a slow connection can be the result.
