Yes, I tend to agree. Perhaps whoever was selling it has FTTP!

The "Normal" FTTP BT Smart Hub 6  which had a red Port at the rear did work with FTTC as well as FTTP, as members here found out

It appears its the New BT Ultrafast smart Hub that is not compatible.

Yes, I have installed many Smart Hub 6's, but not, as yet, come across the "Ultrafast" hub.

I believe these are installed in FTTP premises by a BT engineer, (Although self-install is nowavailable.)

Ultrafast Hubs have their own manual and is a different animal to what is being described by @onlyme4 in that this has no WAN port but an unused phone socket. However this is in the home versions list. So I guess there is yet another version, that is, a Business Ultrafast Hub. If not, just what is it that @onlyme4 has got his hands on?

'Jordanc1230' I tried to set up the Ultrafast Hub 6 again this evening, checking the sync speed as you suggested - nothing. So, its just not connecting at all.

'CKComputing' the link you provided to the set up instructions for the Ultrafast Hub 6 is not the version of the hub I have. It looks the same, with the Ultrafast logo on the hub and packaging, but the rear of hub shown in the instructions in not the same same. One of the ethernet ports on my hub has a red 'wan' logo over it, and my packaged didn't come with any phone line filters. The inside of the box shows instructions about how to connect to an OpenReach Modem.

 

It's all very puzzling, because I can't find any reference to this hub either on the web or BT's own site. On a positive note, it appears that the hub I bought wasn't listed correctly on a well know auctions site, so I am entitled to a money back guarantee. 

Thanks again for your help and support with this. I've certainly learned my lesson about which version of the Hub 6 to buy next !

Let me add to this conundrum. If you look at the following old Ebay listing: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BT-Smart-Hub-6-Home-Hub-6-FTTP-VERSION-/192439769053?epid=12008053465&has... The box is labelled BT Smart Hub and the part number 084318 is the same as @onlyme4 reported in an earlier post. However the front is not labelled 'Ultrafast'. So the part number is the same but the contents of the box are different!?

I wonder whether this is a very early version and the Ultrafast logo was attached before BT decided to add to their range with the faster service. If this is the case then the reason that it can't be adapted could be no more that the default firmware locks it out. It did occur to me that it might be possible to reconfigure it by connecting it to the broadband via a modem, wait for BT to update the firmware then reconfigure it. It then occurred to me that to change it from a straight router to a VDSL modem/router would require a factory reset. This would re-install the original firmware and so another of Baldrick's cunning plans went straight in the bin.

It might be possible to use this as a WAP but @onlyme4 getting a refund and starting again is obviously the best move.

I have posted before about BT Smart Hub Business, today I lost all internet and despite resetting many times couldn't get it back, Orange light bright, I reverted back to HH and modem again and the red light showed on that, I contacted the help line and they said I had a fault on my phone line that will take a couple of days maybe to sort out, they did get me up and running with internet again albeit not my normal speed 68mpbs  I got 45mpbs which is okay while they sort it, then I should get my full speed, the problem is now I decided to go back to the SmartHub, but still get the Orange light, I tried a reset again but to no avail, I have tried all ways to sort it but can't get it to connect, is the fact I have a fault on the phone line stopping it?  or should I totally reset back to factory settings and start again?  any help will be appreciated.

My thoughts, I would, Try the HH again if that connects with your 'Faulty Line" then use that until line rectified.

Reset BT Hub both on the router itself and in the "settings Menu"  and start over again.  When resetting on  the hub itself, it takes  a long time, about a minute to push the pin in to reset,

Many thanks, did what you said and now BT SmartHub is up and running again and with better speed 65mbps, maybe they sorted the faulty line.

Yes it does reboot every 2 weeks or so, it used to reboot every week until the firmware update in Jan (SG4B1000B522) .

Its normal with the Smart Hub reading BT HH forums.

My business smart hub received a new update on 24th February firmware is now SG4B1B008104. The January update changed the BT WiFi option to something called Public WiFi mode. The latest update seems to have enabled some more options to do with public WiFi mode. You can now choose BT WiFi or guest WiFi. From reading into it guest WiFi allows up to 13 people to use WiFi for free so useful if you have a business I suppose. more about guest WiFi here: https://business.bt.com/guest-wifi/

Can you turn off the public wifi mode? Is this perhaps a stealth way of BT spreading its open wifi network?

Does anyone know whether the Home Hub 6 can be configured as a WAP - ie just to access an existing network, rather than to manage the internet connection?

Public wi-fi mode is off by default. It's only available on the business version and offers a guest option mainly aimed at those who have a business where they would like to offer their customers free wi-fi without a password or anything to sign up to. It's a feature a lot of business users have asked for so guess that's why they have added it but like i says it's disabled by default so nothing to worry about.
