Using my Asus AX88U router with a FTTP connection......

Hi

Next week I'll have an engineer visit to swap out our FTTC connection, had since 2015, and move over to a FTTP 500 one. I am hopeful that I can continue to use my Asus noted router rather than open the still sealed box of the Hub 2 router.

When I talked with support about this they informed me, by email with details and also a link that my connection details would need to be changed from....

to then this......

and that needs to be set or there will be authentication issues.

My AX88U, under the WAN settings, does not have such VLAN options, I'm running a Merlin firmware. The support agent told me that my username and password will remain the same.

Would I be right in assuming that all the VLAN stuff should be taken care of within the ONT box and there is nothing related to the VLAN settings noted above that needs to be manually inputted..?

The support page that was linked is here....

Settings for routers to connect to PN

Thanks

BTW I have seen this older post and that seems to confirm that I can ignore the VLAN part..? Does that information still apply..?

I think that is the settings for an FTTC connection.  For FTTP the vlan should be disabled as the ONT takes care of that.  Looking at the link on your post, I think the give away bit is the talk of an Openreach Modem

Re: Using my Asus AX88U router with a FTTP connection......

The OR engineer will probably want to confirm that the service is working correctly and as expected using the supplied router.
If you decide to swap it out for your existing one and it does not work, then they will say it is your equipment not the line.
Was a member for years, but moved from PN fttc to fttp from an AltNet. Getting 940Mb up and down. Happy to stay on here and try to help others. 

Re: Using my Asus AX88U router with a FTTP connection......

The first screenshot are the settings advised for a FTTC connection. The second screenshot are the settings advised for the FTTP type. I have just spoken to PN now and they advise that the ONT box will take care of the VLAN settings that are needed. They also acknowledged that the linked page is not correct, as well as the information sent to me. The agent will inform those responsible for the information being given out, as well as what is written within that linked page, needs to be changed to omit the VLAN part.

The current advice is to need to use those VLAN settings, as it was advised in 2022, in that linked post, to avoid authentication issues. But, from what I understand, that will cause them due to the ONT box.

The ONT box is acting the same as the Openreach modem did for the FTTC connection.

Thanks

@vimesuk

The problem with all of this is the help pages it only mentions a router where it should mention a combined modem/router, where a VLAN 101 may be needed to be set. As mentioned the Openreach Modem or ONT have VLAN 101 set

Here is an example of a TP-Link VR400 (modem/router) device I once used.

DSL internet WAN setup.png

If I had NOT enabled VLAN 101 is would not have worked

With a Hub Two in "bridge mode" (modem only mode) like the Openreach modem and ONT the VLAN 101 is already set
