Varying Wifi signal and loss of Broadband on TG582n

Hi all

Yesterday for a period of hours I had no Broadband and the were periods when it was erratic.

I assumed it was a PN problem. However later when it seemed to have settled down I found the wifi signal was jumping all over the place such that my laptop couldn't connect.

Using Vistumblr I could see that the laptop was getting a wifi signal of between 0% and 70% but wasn't stable at any signal level.

Intial problem,

The TG582n had a red power light, nothing else was lit

The Openreach Fibre Modem Lan 1 light was out, the other two were lit.

Later

The TG582 reconnected and the Lan 1 light on the modem was lit

That I assumed was a Broadband outage, that was fixed.

After reconnecting all the lights on the TG582 are lit green and the modem Lan 1 is lit but I found the wifi is all over the place.

Does this suggest that the problem was/is with the TG582 having gone faulty all along?.

Any suggestions?

Cheers Keith

@melmerby If you are still using a TG582N, I would think the chances of it being the culprit is a big possibility. What service product are you on (ADSL/FTTC/FTTP? and how long have you had the TG?

Red power light on a TG582bis not good. Indicates a router/ power supply fault.

Agreed, @MisterW , and I'm surprised anyone is still using them, TBH. This suggests @melmerby is out of contract, as hopefully, they would have been offered a more modern unit on re-contract?

Re: Varying Wifi signal and loss of Broadband on TG582n

Thanks for replying.

I've had the TG582 since my locale got Unlimited Fibre FTTC, I was one of the first in my locale.(I would say at least 8 years)

I changed my contract last year to a different product still using the unlimited fibre, still FTTC, they didn't offer a new router.

I've been with PN for around 25 years from the days of ADSL.

It's just been down again for a couple of hours, the openreach fibre modem Lan 1 was flashing, all the lights on the TG582 were flashing green, no broadband at all.

It's back on now steady but the WiFi is still all over the place.

@melmerby As said previously, your TG582N is very long in the tooth, and due for replacement - AIUI you have to request a new Hub these days, they are not automatically sent when you renew.

I suggest you contact PN and ask them to send a replacement for your failing unit. It will cost you the £6.99 P&P but is essential.

Re: Varying Wifi signal and loss of Broadband on TG582n

@melmerby

There should have been the option to request a new Hub as part of the renewal process if renewing on line.

I think it's time to say good bye to your trusty TG582N, on the plus side the replacement Hub two does not require a separate modem and it will give you 5GHz WiFi.

Follow the advice given and phone plusnet

Re: Varying Wifi signal and loss of Broadband on TG582n

THe current set up has the fibre modem in the hall next to where the incoming line is.

The TG582 is upstairs in the "office", connected by LAN to the modem.

A single unit would be very inconvenient.

Re: Varying Wifi signal and loss of Broadband on TG582n

In that case you can keep the modem and use the Hub two as a router only device

Modem connects to Hub two WAN port

Re: Varying Wifi signal and loss of Broadband on TG582n

Hub 2 arrived yesterday morning, just 24hrs after phoning PN. Great service.

I have a problem finding space as it won't fit where the TG582 was as it is too big🙁

Currently the fibre modem is downstairs by the front door but the TG582 is upstairs in the "office" sitting on top of a bookshelf speaker, which isn't big enough to take the Hub 2

Ai it looks like I shall provide a small shelf dowstairs and do away with the fibre modem as well, which is wall mounted.

Shame the Hub 2 wasn't designed so it could be wall mounted as well as standing on a desk.etc. BT missed a trick there.

I've got another Wifi/ Lan hub in another building and that is designed to lay flat on a desk like the Hub 2 or as I have it mounted upright on a flat surface using the keyhole mounts like the modem.

Keith.

Re: Varying Wifi signal and loss of Broadband on TG582n

I'd check on ebay as I bought a Hub One bracket there a few years back.

The Hub two can be setup in bridge mode (as a modem) if that's of any help. Use your own router if you want

Re: Varying Wifi signal and loss of Broadband on TG582n

AIUI the PN Hub 2 and the BT Home Hub 2 are basically the same and so this sort of wall mount bracket should work with the PN router.

Re: Varying Wifi signal and loss of Broadband on TG582n

Fix

Hi Ian

Nice to know that there is a bracket,

However I have decided to mount it on a small shelf high up so it's no likely to get a wack.

I can knock one up quite quickly, so no hassle.

The Hub 2 is currently sitting on the floor close to where the fibre modem was on the wall, I decided to use the Hub 2 on it's own and do away with both the old units.I had to do some cable connection swapping to get things up and running but now sorted.

It is working perfectly with a nice strong wireless signal all over the house and the phone, printer and laptop all working nicely on the wifi.

Cheers
