low to highish speeds on Wi-Fi

On full fibre 500 but have problem with "odd" speeds on Wi-Fi. Router on ground floor with my PC at first floor level (some 2.5m directly above router)

Speeds on wi-fi vary, can go from 250+ to mid 50's on same day, indeed within same hour. Have tried extenders and powerline units all to no avail. Have tried taking PC down to plug into router with ethernet cable and it works fine, but my "office" on first floor.

iPhone & iPad work when adjacent to router at good speeds (mid 450).

Anyone any ideas as to why wi-fi giving odd speeds ?? New router ?Huh

@forbes-38

I suspect your PC is switching between 2.4 and 5GHz wifi signal and it is that causing the variations of speed.

Try changing the wifi adapter on the PC to Prefer to use 5GHz to see if this helps.

Device manager is where the setting is found (Windows key +X then M)

@forbes-38

Can't answer your specific query but is there any chance of running ethernet cable upstairs?

I'm particularily thinking of external cabling - out from downstairs, up the wall and then back inside. Would give a solid speed upstairs and is future proof.

You really need hard wired to ensure a fast and reliable network connection.
