my wifi is rejecting certain PC's

I have a few backup/spare PC's and all where working correctly until friday afternoon, when I tried to connect one, I got a browser error telling me to reset my router (I did but it made no difference) this and one other laptop just won't connect to the wifi (well get online) they are connecting but getting no Internet and the browser gives the message I've tried looking on the Plusnet box connections but can see nothing wrong, I've tried rebooting it but all's the same, my daily use laptop is working fine its just these odd 2 which have always worked with no problems, I do have a sim card connection on another box and everything connects and works fine on this but it does have limited data plan so I don't want to use unnecessarily. any suggestions

Temporarily turn off security on the router; does the problem device then connect?
If so, something on that device needs changing.

If other devices connect with no problem, it cannot be the 'Plusnet box'.

Re: my wifi is rejecting certain PC's

Is it a case of those connecting to the 5GHz band work and those connecting to the 2.4GHz do not (or vice versa)? If so it could be the router. Check that both bands are switched on.

@Anonymous  Last week you were worried about unauthorised access to your network, did you change any router settings ?

@jgb I may be wrong, but I suspect this machine is possibly quite old, and not 5Ghz compatible.

Whilst you might not be aware of anything changing, PCs connected to the Internet are likely to be being constantly updated in the background. Does it connect using an Ethernet cable?

One thing to try if it's running Windows is to enter the following commands, one at a time, followed by Enter (carriage return): into the Search field, that's the one in the bottom bar on the screen, NOT your browser search field.

cmd

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

See if that fixes it.

@Anonymous

As @Baldrick1 implies, it sounds like the DHCP process (that allocates IP addresses to devices on the network) might be failing with these devices for some reason.

I would try a wired (Ethernet) connection first to check that works.

It is also possible that the devices only support certain types of WiFi. This is a more complex topic .

Have a read of this:

Re: my wifi is rejecting certain PC's

its what you would think but its the case, if the pc that wont access the internet is connected to another provider its working fine when I try on the plusnet I'm told to reset the plusnet box but that doesn't cure it
