Yesterday Microsoft announced the launch of the new Xbox, the Xbox One. There was certainly a lot of interest, while we can only make an educated guess as to what people were watching, based on the time we think several thousand customers watched the video of the announcement online ... 
With in built Blu-ray drive, Skype, TV and video content, voice commands (the world gets more and more like Star Trek every day) and even the ability to detect your heart rate it packs a impressive array of features to make it not just the new games console but entertainment centre, fitness tool and communication device. The new Xbox is also looking towards the future with 4k TVs in mind. While 4k TVs aren't cheap or readily available right now, they are on sale and will come down in price. In the lifetime of this console it’s possible that 4k TVs will eventually be priced at a cost similar to the price of HDTVs today. If you look at the price of HDTVs over the last 10 years, what helped to bring that price down? The PS3 and the Xbox 360 with their HD content would certainly be a big contributor to the take up of HD TVs and thus the economy of scale to bring the cost down. 4k is of big interest but what kind of bit-rate is a 4k stream going to need? Today you can watch a 10Mbps 1080p HD video stream via your broadband connection. To make full use of all of the new console's capabilities, you will almost certainly need Fibre.
