October is national breast cancer awareness month, of course being a woman and having witnessed the devastating affects of this disease in both mine and friends families, I have been an avid supporter of these fundraising events held throughout October for many years.
So, together with the support of other female employees here at PlusNet we identified a great opportunity for the whole company to get involved and raise some money for Breast Cancer Care by hosting our very own special event. Here’s my story…..
Friday 19th October started out like every other Friday here at PlusNet towers, or so everyone thought! As people started to stream into the building it soon became apparent that this day was like no other Friday - everyone was wearing very similar coloured clothing all various shades of……..Pink!
Yes, the In the Pink event really took hold, people dressed from head to toe in Pink, there was an abundance of wigs, furry boots and feather boa’s – and that was just the men!
To get the day started and everyone in the spirit, Spencer changed the PlusNet logo to add the Pink ribbon logo of Breast Cancer Care and changed the font colour to pink, bright Pink balloons were used to decorate the offices, Melise & Annette sold over 250 raffle tickets and Breast Cancer Care biked over a box of the Pink ribbon badges to sell throughout the day – all this before 11am!
At 2pm in the afternoon the 2nd floor west was transformed from an office into the staging for the main event…..PlusNet Pink Pub Quiz.
Whereby 12 teams from across the business all came together to compete against each other for the prestigious title of ‘PlusNet Pub Quizzer of the Year’. Each team consisted of 6 people pitting their brains against the quizmaster to answer 30 questions across a range of categories, including General Knowledge, TV, Sport and of course a special round on all things Pink!
As with every good pub quiz there were a few contentious questions thrown in to create lively debate across the teams (just how many James Bonds have there been?) in addition some of the teams answers uncovered some new words that are currently not listed in the Oxford English dictionary - Vertiphobia anyone?
The worthy winners of the ‘PlusNet Pink Pub Quiz 2007’ were the Marketing team (Tero, Martyn, Nick, Chris, Phil and Paul) who scored a fantastic 30 out of a possible 37.
Once the excitement of the Quiz finally died down the raffle was drawn, prizes consisted of Pink Champagne, Pink bubble bath and a Box of Chocolates.
This was closely followed by the winners of the fancy dress competition, prizes were awarded for Best Male and Best Female wearing Pink…..the very worthy winners of these two prizes were Chris Cotterill and Annette Stones (second and third from the left in the photo).
Once the day’s fun events were brought to a close the funds were finally counted, all the staff (together with a donation from the company) managed to raise £562 for Breast Cancer care. This is truly an amazing result for such a worthwhile charity and of course a good day had by all!!
